Barbara Ingeborg (Handke) Thomas, age 72 of New Albany, passed away on Friday, January 30, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, courage, and unconditional love.
Born in Sarstedt Germany, Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late Adolf & Erna Handke. Gifted with both brilliance and determination, she earned a full scholarship to the University of Louisville, a remarkable achievement that carried her far from her homeland and into a new chapter of life filled with promise, challenge, and discovery. What began as a journey across the ocean became a lifelong story of purpose, growth, and love.
Barbara completed her Master's degree and devoted many years to her work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), living out her calling to care for others with
empathy, patience, and deep understanding. Her move to the United States proved especially life-changing in the most beautiful way-when she met the love of her life,
William "Bill" Thomas, who picked her up at the airport! From that very moment, love blossomed into 41 years of shared memories, steadfast support, laughter, and
unwavering devotion.
A lover of nature, Barbara found peace and renewal in hiking and being outdoors, where the quiet of the woods allowed invigorated her spirit. She was an avid animal
lover and defender, never turning away a creature in need, and she especially adored her cherished kitties, Percy and Ginger. Her home and her heart were always
open.
Barbara delighted in British murder mysteries, classic films, particularly Alfred Hitchcock movies, with "North by Northwest" holding a special place in her heart. She also treasured trips with her sister, enjoying time together on the North Sea island of Juist and reconnecting with her German family. Barbara was also an active member of Woman Within International.
A true caregiver at heart, Barbara made it her life's mission to support and advocate for her son, Andreas, helping him navigate epilepsy and sensory and social
challenges with fierce love, patience, and hope. In all she did, Barbara made people feel deeply loved-ensuring they knew they belonged and that they were safe in her
presence. Her kindness was quiet yet profound, and her compassion left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Dieter Handke.
She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 41 years, William Tyler Thomas of New Albany; her sons, Christopher Thomas and Andreas Thomas of New Albany; her step-daughter, Amy Thomas of Oklahoma City; sister, Margit Gocke; brother, Manfred Handke; her grandchildren, Michael South and Alexandria Thomas; and her two treasured great-grandchildren, Kinley Violett and Atlas McMurray.
In accordance with her wishes, Miss Barbara Thomas will be cremated. There will be no services at Scott Funeral Home (2515 Veterans Parkway).
Barbara's life was a beautiful testament to love without conditions, service without recognition, and strength carried with grace. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
