Barbara Bott Tingey

1945 - 2024

Barbara was born in Brigham City, Utah to George Henry Bott and Christine Nielsen Bott. She was an active and happy child who loved to sing and swing in the big swing her dad built for her. She grew up close to aunts, uncles, cousins and considered them her immediate family.
Barbara attended Box Elder High school where she played softball and was a BEHS B'Ette. Upon graduation she attended Weber State College and received her Teaching Degree in the spring of 1967. She started teaching for Ogden City Schools that same fall and she married Palmer Stuart Tingey during UEA weekend in October that same fall. They knew each other their whole lives as the families were friends and they lived just a block from each other. She often told the story that in high school she could hear Palmer start his station wagon and she knew she needed to be ready to go. They lived in Ogden until Alaine was born in 1970 and they moved back to Brigham City. They lived in Brigham City until 1974 when they moved to Bountiful, Utah. James Palmer arrived in December of that year and four years later, SuzAnne came along to complete the Tingey Trio.
She has always been a lover of animals big and small. She had many pets throughout the years including Peggy the chicken, Buttons, Midnight, Tiger, Blue, Cosmo, and Heber the cats, and Shep, Mitzie, Charlie, Flash, Chuck, Norman and Mionie the dogs. She also had a whole flock of finches that she fed for many years on the back deck of the Jayhawk house.
Barbara was a teacher and leader her whole life. She taught school for more than 3 decades. She started in Ogden and retired from Lodi Unified School District in Lodi, CA in 2013 after 26 years. She taught at Morada Middle School and Lodi Middle School. In the last few years of her career she had the children of some of her students from her first few years in Lodi. She was a positive and instrumental influence for nearly 4,000 students in her years in the classroom. She loved teaching science and especially coaching Science Olympiad with her fellow teachers at LMS. She loved it all and taught it all - from botany to geology and everything in between - she embodied the very idea of being a "lifelong learner." She loved science! She was STEM before STEM was cool!
Barbara was an avid proponent of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a Den Mother, Round Table Commissioner, Pow Wow Staff, and we attended Philmont as a family in 1984. She attended Cub Scout Leader Woodbadge as a Bear and was awarded the Silver Beaver in 2016 and was the proud mom of an Eagle Scout.
Barbara loved music! She learned to play the piano as a young girl and always professed that her favorite calling at church was as the Primary Pianist. She served in many ways at church. She was Relief Society President, Primary President, Young Women's President and Camp Specialist. She and Palmer also served at the Family History Center for the past five years.
Barbara was a very creative person. She enjoyed sewing, crochet and cake decorating. She created many a prom dress, birthday cake, and wedding cake complete with fountains and fresh flowers.
She encouraged all of her children and grandchildren to learn to play the piano. She was an avid Band Parent and served as the Band Booster President for the Lodi High School Band in 1987-88. With her encouragement and support (and sometimes cajoling), everyone picked up at least 2 other instruments. From Trombone, Tuba, Trumpet, Clarinet, and Saxophone, all the way to Accordion and Organ, she loved to hear her children play!
Barbara is survived by her husband Palmer, Palene Duncan (Todd) and their children Cody Marble, Colton Marble (Shawn), and Kyle Duncan, Alaine Tingey, and SuzAnne Morgan (TC), and James Palmer Tingey (Becky), as well as her grandchildren Taylor Tingey and George Tingey and one great granddaughter Catherine Marble.
