Barry was born November 18, 1939 in Des Moines, Iowa to William E. and Myrtle (Barrett) McKibben. He passed away on June 23, 2025 at Wesley on Grand in Des Moines. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m., Friday, at Soteria Church in West Des Moines. Visitation will resume at 10 a.m., followed by his funeral at 11 a.m., Saturday, at the church. For those unable to attend, a livestream will be available at http://www.soteriadsm.com/live. Private burial will be at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery at a later date.
Barry graduated from Des Moines Lincoln High School in 1958 where he lettered in football and swimming. Following graduation, he attended Iowa State University. On June 26, 1960 he was united in marriage with JoAnn Olcott. Barry worked for Look Magazine, Flynn Dairy, and retired from the Des Moines Register in 2000 and was a retired member of GCIU Local 11. He also farmed for many years.
Barry served as a Bloomfield Township Trustee beginning in 1996. He served on the Board for Bloomfield Township Fire Department from 1996-2001; and as Director on the Northern Warren Fire and ERA beginning in 2001. Barry was a member of Cumming Community Church for over 50 years, serving as Treasurer and Board Trustee. He was a faithful attendee and supporter of Soteria DSM Church since May 2011.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents William E. and Myrtle McKibben, brother and sister-in-law William E. McKibben, Jr. and Shirley McKibben, and grandson Sean Nielsen.
Survivors include wife JoAnn, sons Barrett L. (Sheri) McKibben II, Manassas, VA and William E. (Marlys) McKibben, West Des Moines, IA; grandchildren Barrett L. "Trey" McKibben III, Caroline Spear, Ryan (Olivia) Spear, Daphne Hayes-Mentzer; and great-granddaughter Elena Dole.
