Barry Maham, a beloved father, grandfather, and husband, passed away peacefully at home on March 31, 2025, at the age of 50.
Born on January 17, 1975, in Richmond, Virginia, Barry spent most of his life in Mason Neck, where he was affectionately known as the "Mayor of Gunston." He had a deep love for the water-skiing, fishing, and boating were some of his greatest joys.
Barry's desire to help others led him to the fire service. He started as a volunteer with the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department, where he met Amber. They married on March 21, 1998, and together they raised five children. Barry was proud to coach his children in lacrosse, always present and engaged, supporting them as they developed both athletically and as individuals.
In 1999, Barry was hired by the Fairfax County Fire Department, where he served for over two decades. He rose to the rank of Captain and was an integral member of the Technical Rescue Team, the Urban Search and Rescue Team, and the Fire Boat Program. He also served as an instructor at the Fire Academy, sharing his expertise with new generations of firefighters. His dedication to the fire service and his community was evident in every part of his life.
Barry is survived by his wife, Amber; their children, Bryce (Sam), Makayla, Makenna, Brittian, and Trevor; his grandson, Maverick; and his mother and stepfather, Joy and Bill Schaefer.
A celebration of life will be held on April 8, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. at Expectation Church, 11924 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA, where Barry will be honored with full Fire Department honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the following charities:
