Barry Mitchell Rosenberg

June 30, 1951 – March 28, 2025

Barry was born and raised in New York City (Brooklyn and Queens) before moving to Rochester, NY in 1968 to attend the University of Rochester. In 1970 he took a hiatus from school to join the US Air Force, spending most of his four years in the service as an Air Traffic Controller at Westover Air Force Base. In 1974, after completing his service he returned to the University of Rochester, earning a B.S. in Biology in 1976. During this period, he also met his wife, Peggy Ooi to whom he was married for 45 years.

After college, Barry began his 30-year teaching career as a student teacher with the Brighton School District. He then taught at Wheatland-Chili and Naples before beginning a long tenure at Edison Tech in the Rochester City School District, where he taught High School Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

A nature and animal lover, Barry was a lifelong vegetarian. He enjoyed hiking, canoeing, cross-country skiing, skeet, birdwatching, and foraging for mushrooms, berries, and fossils. He was a proud supporter (and lifetime member of) the Seneca Park Zoo. Despite his sometimes gruff exterior, he had a soft heart. Over the years he brought home several rescue animals (horses, cats, ducks and a rabbit) who became part of the family.

Barry possessed a great sense of humor that he kept to the end, which endeared him to several aides and nurses. He was a good punster, and it was especially fun to see him and the science department chair at Edison tech, joking around.

Barry was a devoted husband and father who put the happiness of his family first. He will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Lucy (Allen Whatley), son Ian, brother Ernest (Karen), sister Jessica (Robert Krupski), aunt Sonia Rolider, cousins Adele and Anita Rolider.
