Bart Lossing Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of Minnesota (First Memorial Funeral Chapel)- Minneapolis on Jul. 8, 2025.
Bart Lossing was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on May 24, 1949, to Helen and Burnie Lossing, where he began his lifelong love of the North Shore.
A job transfer moved the family-five boys and one girl-to Billings, Montana, in the mid-1950s. They spent time in the mountains and outdoors, enjoying many road trips and camping adventures in Yellowstone Park and the Black Hills. In the late 1950s, another transfer brought them to Mounds View, Minnesota where a house was built on Spring Lake. It was the perfect place for the Lossing boys to swim, fish, sail, get into mischief, and keep busy-much to their mother's relief.
Bart joined the wrestling team, having had plenty of practice with his brothers, and graduated from Mounds View High School in 1967. That same year, he met his future wife, Sandy (Skoglund), at the Spring Lake Park VFW teen dance. Their first date was at the Minnesota State Fair-a big hit, as Sandy had never been before.
One of Bart's favorite cars at the time was a red Corvair convertible-historically unsafe, but a lot of fun around town.
The couple married in May 1970, moved to South Minneapolis in April 1972, and welcomed their first dog that September. Their home was filled with books, music, art fair finds, and a total of ten dogs over the years. Summers were spent relaxing at the Skoglund family cabin, attending art fairs and family picnics, and always enjoying music-indoors, outdoors, at the Minnesota Zoo, in-state, and out-of-state. Many road trips took them west to the mountains, the Black Hills, Canada, and both coasts. Bart made sure to always take the road less traveled. To celebrate Sandy's parents' 60th anniversary, they took a 10-day trip of a lifetime to Alaska and the Canadian Territories by plane, train, boat, and bus. As always, Bart was the official photographer.
For over 30 years, Bart worked at the Hennepin County Assessor's Office as a computer programmer, where he made lifelong friends. In anticipation of retirement, they remodeled the kitchen in 2000 and added a family room and bathroom-making their annual "Souper Sunday" celebration more comfortable. The added space also gave Sandy a bigger kitchen and kept the TV from disrupting Bart's music and reading.
Over the years, Bart faced health challenges, including congestive heart failure and, more recently, Alzheimer's. He was admitted to Mount Olivet Careview Home on May 31 and passed away on July 1.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sandy; sister Sharon Anderson; brothers Brent, Steve (Trish), and Darold (Cheryl); and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Burnie, and his brother Craig.
Bart will be remembered for the unmistakable "Lossing laugh" and always feeling "fine." He will be deeply missed by Sandy and his devoted canine companion, Buddy.
Please join us as we come together to celebrate the life, love, and memories of Bart.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025 from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Minneapolis Chapel, located at 4343 Nicollet Ave S, Minneapolis, Minnesota 55409

My deepest condolences to Sandy, family and friends. When I started working at Hennepin County 25 years ago, Bart was my mentor. He was the one that took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. So many memories. Bart was famous, for saying to me "Why not go do some shopping" when our system would go down and we couldn't do any work. or Go walk the skyway, if anyone asks where you've been, just say you got lost" Bart always had a smile on his face, had a infectious laugh and upbeat disposition. Bart was so much fun to work with and will be deeply missed.
