Basil Sakellarios Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rochette Funeral Home & Cremation Services on Dec. 22, 2025.
Basil Sakellarios, 92, of Worcester, MA passed away on December 20. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt and, soon after graduation from accounting school, moved to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) where he met and married his late wife, Anastasia Anastassiades, the love of his life. There, they raised their three children, Marianna, Penelope, and Andrew. As an entrepreneur at heart, he owned a small department store, a butchery, and a game reserve hotel. Always curious and creative, he was able to converse in five languages, to make his own wine, and he had an amazing green thumb, especially for fig trees that he shared with friends and family. He was also a pilot and used his plane to ferry people and products from the capital city to his home near Victoria Falls.

Moving to the United States in 1979, he and his family lived in Newton, MA for many years where he owned a grocery store for nearly twenty years. After retirement, they moved to Onset, MA where he loved to go boating and fishing and to look out at the ocean view from his veranda. His best moments were, by far, when he was able to host and be with his expanding family. Being a grandfather and great-grandfather brought him more joy than anything else and they certainly loved him in return. He remained, until the end, a powerful presence in his family's life, a beloved patriarch to his entire family.

Following the passing of his wife in 2017, he moved to The Willows Retirement Community in Worcester, MA where he loved and appreciated the staff and all of the services they offered him.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Penelope, and his sisters, Pelagia Balodimos of Newton and Marika Xenakis of Waltham, MA, and his daughter-in-law, Mary Sakellarios. He leaves behind his children, Marianna Doulamis (Peter), of Nashua, NH, Penny Stamas (Fr. Christopher) of Holden, MA, and Andy of Andover, MA, sister-in-law Cherril Anastassiades grandchildren Giannis Doulamis (Erica), Theodora Esparza (Will), Anastasia Thomas (Mark), Carly Sakellarios (Tim), Maggie, Lindsay, Luke Sakellarios (Lexi), Christiana and Elaina Stamas, and great-grandchildren Matias and Elias Esparza, Raphaela and Nora Thomas, Nina and Cleo Doulamis, and three generations of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Monday, December 29, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Philip Greek Orthodox Church, 500 West Hollis Street, Nashua, NH followed by his funeral service at 11 a.m. His burial will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Cemetery in Nashua. In lieu of flowers, those who prefer may offer memorial donations in his memory to St. Philip Church or the St. Methodios Faith and Heritage Center, 329 Camp Merrimac Rd, Contoocook, NH 03229.
