Basir Yusef McCoy, affectionately known as "Bas" to his friends and "Bascino" to his family, was born on January 9, 1994, at Pennsylvania Hospital. He was the beloved son of Wadiyah Aaliyah Moore and Yusef McCoy, and was lovingly raised by his grandparents, Yvette and Alfredo.
Basir was educated in the Philadelphia School District, attending Harambee and later graduating from Lincoln High School. He furthered his education at Penn State University. At the young age of 14, Basir began working in the mailroom at 1199C, where his strong work ethic and leadership skills led him to become a National Union Organizer.
On July 21, 2021, Basir proudly became the father of a son, Yasyin Basir McCoy, and later welcomed his daughter, Maisyn Milay McCoy, on May 1, 2023. Becoming a father brought him immense joy, and he cherished every moment spent with his children. Basir was a devoted father, a big brother, a leader, a co-worker, and a loyal friend, deeply loved by all who knew him.
His hobbies included going to the gym, taking his kids to Urban Air, traveling with his union job, attending concerts, and cooking with family and friends. Known for his fearless spirit, clever wit, and magnetic personality, Basir was a proud Muslim brother who was both cocky and kind, rude and polite, confident yet thoughtful.
Basir leaves behind his precious children, Yasyin and Maisyn; his loving mother Wadiyah; his father Yusef; stepparents Pam and Brandon; brothers Wari, Jamaul, Malik, and Aaron; sister Sharelle; grandparents Yvette, Alfredo, Bill, and Faruq; godmother Monique; godbrother Amir; children's mother Tionna Reed; cousins Mekhi, Kuey, Mar, Chad, and Armani; his Love-Sultana; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends, especially his Sis/Aunt Naiah, Thensa, Kia, Ameen, Lip, and Jeremaine (RIP).
Basir's love, laughter, and light will live on through everyone who knew him. Rest in peace, Bas. You will forever be loved and remembered.
