Becky Coia Obituary

Becky Ann Coia

September 18, 1964 - May 4, 2025

LAKE VILLA, Ill. - Becky Coia (60) Lake Villa, Ill. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Becky Ann Coia on May 4, 2025 who was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend. She was the heart of her home and family, and with her husband, Jerry, they raised two children, Kyle (33) and Kevin (29) to be independent and thoughtful adults.

Becky began her life in Waukegan, Ill. on September 18, 1964, the daughter of Roger Van Slochteren and Shirley Schlagel (nèe VanPatten).

While growing up Becky loved having sleepovers in the basement and going shopping with her Grandma Lynn.

Years later, while working at Ace Hardware in Antioch, Ill., Becky met her future husband Jerold Coia (Jerry). They began dating and were married on June 20, 1987. After the wedding, they made their home in Lake Villa.

Becky enjoyed being involved with the boys' school activities, Cub Scouts Pack 88 and Boy Scouts Troop 323. She also volunteered at events in her community with the VFW Post 4308 as well as organizing and coordinating parades for the VFW and the Village of Lake Villa.

In later years Becky enjoyed spending time in New Mexico with her son Kevin and his corgi dog "Teddy" as well as visiting son Kyle and his family in Iowa, his wife Laurie, their two children Lareyna and Zonya, and their cockapoo dog, Lily.

Becky loved her granddaughters and enjoyed spending precious time holding them in her arms when they were babies, listening to their songs, as well as reading stories and sharing lots of hugs and laughter.

For 37 years Becky worked at Naval Facilities Engineering and Command (NAVFAC) as a Production Controller where she was respected and valued by her coworkers. To Becky, the people she worked with were not just coworkers but friends.

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, Jerold (Jerry) Coia of Lake Villa, Ill.; sons, Kyle (Laurie) Coia of Des Moines, Iowa and Kevin Coia of Albuquerque N.M.; two grandchildren, Lareyna and Zonya; mother, Shirley Schlagel; brother, Brett (Vicki) Van Slochteren of Antioch, Ill.; brothers-in-law, James, John (Janice) and Jeffrey Coia of Lake Villa, Ill. as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Becky is preceded in death by her father, Roger Van Slochteren; stepfather, Richard Schlagel; stepsisters, Renee (Tom) Zoller (Schlagel), Rebecca (Scott) RuBright (Schlagel); and brother-in-law, Joseph (Julie) Coia.

Becky's legacy of love and kindness will survive in all who knew her and loved her.
