Benedict "Ben" Pohlen, age 67, of Taunton, MN passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023 at the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson, MN after a battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7p.m. on Monday, October 23rd at the Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel in Canby and a private family service will follow at 7p.m.. Private family burial will be at the St. Leo Catholic Cemetery in St. Leo, MN at a later date. Houseman Funeral Home-Birk Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.
Benedict Raymond Pohlen was born April 18, 1956 in Canby, Minnesota to parents Magnus and Agnes (Haag) Pohlen. Ben was raised on his parent's farm near St. Leo, Minnesota alongside his six siblings: Bill, Bob, Donna, Mary, Karen and Bryan. Ben graduated from Canby Public School in 1974. He then attended Canby Vo tech until 1976 where he studied in the welding program. Ben would go on to have a 14-year welding career. He then pursued a career in road construction which lasted 32 years until he retired in July of 2021. Ben enjoyed working on the road as he was able to have his winters off in which he enjoyed his love for ice fishing. You could often find Ben in the middle of Lake John during the cold winter months.
Besides fishing, Ben also enjoyed welding as a side hobby. He particularly had a passion for reconstructing motorcycles to his liking. Besides his children and grandchildren, Ben's pride and joy was his workshop which housed several chopped-up motorcycles, Harley memorabilia and other tinkering projects. When not working on motorcycle restorations, Ben enjoyed welding tricycle flower planters which he gifted to those closest to him.
Ben is survived by his children: Dana (Shane) Rieder of Minneota and Devin (Courtney) Pohlen of Taunton; his grandchildren: Silas and Slade Rieder, Quinn, Kelleigh, Cael and Crew Pohlen; his siblings, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary.
