Arlene E. Fliss, age 96, of Canby, MN, passed away Wednesday, October 8, 2025 at the Johnson Memorial Care Center in Dawson, MN. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 11, 2025 at the First Presbyterian Church in Canby with Rev. Levi Bollerud officiating. Burial will be in the Canby City Cemetery, Canby. Visitation will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. Houseman Funeral Home, Birk Chapel in Canby is entrusted with the arrangements.
Arlene Evelyn (Bruns) Fliss was born December 6, 1928 to Theodore and Susie (Benson) Bruns on the family farm in Wergeland Township near Porter, MN. She was raised near Porter. Arlene was confirmed in 1943 at the First Presbyterian Church in Canby, MN. She graduated from Canby High School in 1946. Following high school, she attended the Johnson Beauty Academy in Mankato, MN. She returned to Canby and worked for Murel Schule and Beatrice Erickson.
Arlene was united in marriage to Harold "Bud" Fliss on April 30, 1949 at the First Presbyterian Church in Canby. Following their marriage, they lived in Canby where she worked as a beautician and a housewife. In 1950, she purchased the Hazel Ventley Beauty Shop and operated that until 1957. In 1957, she moved to the J.N. Johnson residence and owned and operated Arlene's Beauty Salon until her retirement in 1977. On April 5, 2001 Bud passed away. Arlene continued to live in Canby where she remained active in many organizations.
Arlene was member of the First Presbyterian Church in Canby where she served as chairperson in Circle, Deacon, Elder, Lector, choir, usher, taught Sunday School, Christian Education Director, and Resource Center Director of Church School. She also served as the Moderator for PW, card person, Chairperson of In His Service Groups, flower person, driver, and volunteered at Depot Museum-King of Trails. She was a member of MECCA. Arlene was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and served as President many times. Her hobbies included reading, homemaking, gardening, embroidering, spending time at the lake cabin, traveling, writing letters, and most of all, love of family.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Constance (Demore) Larson, Appleton, MN, Cynthia (Michael) Staab, Dawson, MN, Doran (Randal) Kack, Canby, MN and Rebecca (Timothy) Miller, Porter, MN and Steven (Roxanna) Fliss, Canby, MN; grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister Betty Richardson, Storm Lake, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bud; grandson David Staab, great grandsons Miles Fliss and Conroy Miller, siblings: Archie Bruns and Shirley Petersen.
