Services for Benhard Wayne Ehler will be held at St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Killeen on Friday, September 12, at 11 am.
Wayne Ehler was born in San Antonio, Texas, to Benhard Ehler and Elsie Ehler Pfullmann, both of whom preceded him in death. He passed peacefully on August 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, quiet strength, and enduring love. He is survived by his sister Joyce Ann Thomas of Killeen, Texas; sister Gale Lynn Ehler of San Antonio, Texas; and brother Kenneth Ehler of Schertz, Texas. Wayne was a beloved uncle to several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a treasured friend to many. Wayne's life was a gentle symphony of resilience and connection. From his early days at Austin State School-where he met the devoted Ms. Janice Goodspeed-to his years working the ski slopes in Michigan, Wayne built a life rooted in friendship and care. Mrs. Shana Branding and her husband were constants during his time up north, offering unwavering support and companionship. Wayne returned to Texas in 2014 and lived independently in his apartment in Killeen for many years. He took pride in caring for himself, maintaining routines, and staying connected to the community he loved. It wasn't until 2022, when his health began to decline, that he moved into the Wellness and Rehab Center-a transition marked by grace and quiet courage. There, Wayne was blessed with a remarkable roommate who looked out for him daily, offering comfort and camaraderie. Louis, one of his closest caregivers, fed Wayne his lunch with tenderness and spoke fondly of Wayne's unique habits-like his insistence that pants be hung separately and his clothes kept just so. These small routines reflected Wayne's quiet dignity and pride in how he presented himself. Wayne found joy in church dinners, never missing a chance to gather with others, share a meal, and bask in the warmth of community. But some of his happiest musical moments came at weddings he attended. He loved staying close to the band, letting the music wrap around him like a familiar embrace. Whether it was the heartfelt twang of country ballads or the lively bounce of hoopapa German tunes, Wayne adored it all-especially accordion music. His heart danced to every melody, and his smile said more than words ever could. A Heart Full of Giving Wayne's love for family was never more evident than during the holidays. On one memorable visit, his youngest niece Cheynate took him shopping at Walmart. What was meant to be a quick trip turned into a heartfelt mission-Wayne insisted on buying dresses for all the little girls and outfits for every little boy. Cheynate, ready to head home, called her mom and exclaimed, "He's going to buy the store-how do I get him out of here?" But Wayne was undeterred. He took his time, choosing each gift with care, making sure no child was left out. That night, the aisles of Walmart became his sleigh, and Wayne, ever the giver, made Christmas brighter for everyone. Wayne's Wish In quiet conversations with his dear friend Shana, Wayne often spoke about death-not with fear, but with longing. He would say, "I just want to be with my mom and dad and my cats-Kali, Shadow, and Isabelle-and away from bad people. Because people don't always make it to heaven." His words were simple, yet profound. They reflected a heart that had seen both kindness and hardship, and a soul that yearned for reunion with those who loved him unconditionally. Wayne believed in a heaven where peace reigned, where love endured, and where he could finally rest in the company of those who made him feel whole. Wayne's legacy is one of quiet strength, heartfelt connections, and a life lived with grace. He gave freely of his heart, and in return, he was surrounded by those who cherished him deeply. The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to all who cared for Wayne, especially Janice, Shana, and Louis, whose compassion and support brought comfort and grace during his final chapter. Scripture "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." -2 Timothy 4:7
