Benjamin Pate Obituary

Published by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary on Sep. 4, 2019.
Benjamin was born on March 10, 1936 and passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2019. Sam graduated from Ashford High School where he played three varsity sports, was President of the student body and played clarinet in the band. If you were caught taking a cat nap in Sam's class, you might wake up with a stuffed rattlesnake 2 inches from your nose or another animal from the freezer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that friends consider remembering him by supporting Columbus Hospice, 7020 Moon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31909, the Koart Academy of Music of First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 828, Columbus, Georgia 31902, Brookstone School, 440 Bradley Park Drive, Columbus, GA 31904, and Georges River Land Trust, 8 North Main Street, Rockland, Maine 04841 designated for Weskeag Marsh - Bob O Link Trail.

Mr. Pate was a huge part of my high school experience from 1982 to 1986 at Brookstone School. Not only did we share a huge passion for the natural world, but his presence provided a safe haven protecting me from the challenges of adolescence.

Mr. Pate and I went on wildlife watching trips together, whether in groups or just the two of us. We visited Cumberland Island, Wakulla Springs, St. Marks, Eufala, etc.

He and Mrs. Nan Pate welcomed me into the yearbook staff, providing me with an outlet for my love of writing and layout. I remember long days with them giggling and laughing with other staff when deadlines loomed and we were tired and silly.

Each time I see a bird or other natural wonder, I think of Sam Pate. I hadn't spoken with him in more than 20 years, but he was and always will be close to me in my thoughts.

Me. Pate was one of the best teachers at HHS in the 70's. I loved his classes, his travel stories, his comedic personality and life's lessons he shared. I've never forgotten him all these years! Although he's not with us, he now has a new birth date. I will see you in Heaven Mr. Pate. I can't wait to share my stories with you.
