Benjamin Claude Tyner peacefully passed away on February 27, 2025, in Vienna, Virginia. Ben was born in Camden, Tennessee on January 2, 1928. His family moved to Washington, D.C. in the mid 1940's where he excelled in school. After graduation from high school, Ben earned an undergraduate and master's degree in Accounting and Finance at Benjamin Franklin University, all while working as a clerk at The Federal Housing Administration (FHA). He rose to senior executive status and helped with the FHA merger into The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Ben was appointed the Director of Mortgage Insurance Accounting, AFM. He was proud to have served in the Federal Government for 38 years, retiring in 1984.
After retirement, Ben enjoyed playing golf, especially with James, Diana, and Jeffrey. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clarendon in Arlington for well over four decades. He served many years as Chairman of the Deacons, Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Chairman of the Premises Committee.
Ben was the proud patriarch of the Tyner family. He is survived by his daughter, Claudia Tyner Offutt; her four children, Gwen Offutt, James Offutt (Hillary), Diana Stropko (Landon), and Jeffrey Offutt (Valerie). He was a wonderful great grandpa to Claudia's grandchildren; AJ (age 12), Courtney (age 11), Penny (age 10), Libby (age 9), Jones Benjamin (age 7), Curtis (age 7), Tommy (age 6), Evie (age 3), and Bradley (age 3).
Ben is also survived by two stepdaughters Susan Bradley McSweeney (Tim) and their son Sean; Dr. Terri Shelton (Dr. Arthur Anastopoulos) and their son Tyler (Jessica); nephews Kenneth Massimo and Larry Tyner (Tami); niece Kathleen Shanahan Wooters (Carl); grandnephews Daniel Orban (Maria) and Joel Orban (Shelly); step granddaughter Jennifer Bergstrom (Taylor), and family friend of well over 60 years, Virginia L. Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lorraine E. Tyner who passed away in 1990 and her daughter, Linda Bradley Davis; his second wife Gerry Shelton Tyner; two sisters, Lorraine Massimo and Orene Shanahan; brother I. Loy Tyner; niece Veronica Orban; nephew Michael Tyner, and his son in law David Gill.
Funeral and burial are private. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Ben's name may do so to either Central Union Mission in Washington, D.C. or Our Savior Lutheran School, 825 South Taylor Street, Arlington, VA, both of which he cheerfully supported for many years.
