With deep sorrow, yet in the hope of the Resurrection, the Ohia family announces the passing of Sir Bennett Chudi Ohia (Ugochinyere I of Isiokpo).
Born on March 7, 1951, in Urualla, Ideato North Local Government Area, Imo State, to the late William Ohia and Elizabeth Ohia (née Ubajekwe), Sir Bennett was a devoted Catholic, community leader, and man of service.
He received his education at St. John Primary School, Isiokpo, Madonna High School, and Achina Boys’ High School. A successful businessman, he engaged in international trade, importing goods from Italy and Taiwan, and later built a thriving polythene and plastic business with his wife. In 2005, he relocated to Washington, DC, where he remained deeply rooted in faith and community.
Sir Bennett worked with the American Red Cross, Whelan Security, and Jesus House DC, where he was known as an exceptional leader, mentor, and father figure, serving with integrity, compassion, and excellence. He also served as President General of Isiokpo Town Union, was a member of the Knights of St. Mulumba (Nigeria) and the Knights of Columbus (USA), and was conferred the chieftaincy title “Ugochinyere I of Isiokpo” in December 2006.
He is survived by his beloved wife Chinyere Ohia; his children Rita Iheanacho (née Ohia), Henry Ohia, Sandra Daniels (née Ohia), and Elvis Ohia; his grandchildren; siblings; and extended family.
We commend his soul to the mercy of God, trusting in Christ’s promise of eternal life:
“I am the resurrection and the life.” (John 11:25)
