Benny Richard Smith November 10, 1940 – September 9, 2025

Benny Richard Smith peacefully returned to his Heavenly Father on September 9, 2025, in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on November 10, 1940, in Newport, Gies, Virginia, to Ben Ira Smith and Ruby Williams, Benny’s life was one of service, devotion, and unwavering kindness.

Benny had a lifelong passion for baseball, both as a player and a coach, and he proudly cheered for his beloved New York Yankees. He shared his love of the game with countless young players over the years, teaching them not just about baseball, but about teamwork, perseverance, and character.

Scouting was another of Benny’s great joys. As a dedicated Scout Master, he helped many young men earn advanced scouting badges, inspiring them to grow in skill and integrity. Benny also loved caring for his yard, often turning simple afternoons into opportunities to greet neighbors, lend a helping hand, and brighten someone’s day with his easy smile.

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Benny joyfully served as a missionary and cherished every opportunity to share his testimony and love for the Savior. He also answered the call to serve his country in the United States Coast Guard, a period of his life he spoke of with honor and gratitude.

Above all, Benny loved his family deeply. He is survived by his devoted wife, Ruby Ann, his daughters Wheelwright (Jim) and Jodie Smith, his sons Benny W. Smith (Amy), Steven R. Smith (Maria), D. Spencer Smith (Katie), and Joseph A. Smith (Moni). He also leaves behind his sisters Dwan Knapton and Debrah Jo Olsen (Tom), along with 19 adoring grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of faith, service, and love.

Benny was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Ira, Elijah “Cloyde” Smitty, and Larry, and his sisters Margaret and Martha.

Benny’s life was a testament to quiet strength, unwavering faith, and love for others. He will be remembered for his laughter, his generosity, and his ability to make everyone feel like family. Though he has left this earthly life, his spirit continues to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
