Bernadette Cecilia Qualey Hunt, passed into the arms of the Lord Friday evening, August 19, 2022. She earned her rest after 96 years and was surrounded by her family during her last few days.
Born in Benedicta, Maine on March 15, 1926, Bernadette was the youngest daughter of nine children to Lewis and Flora MacDonald Qualey. She graduated from St. Benedict's High School and after a year working as a nanny in Boston MA, she attended Westbrook College in Portland where she earned a Medical Secretary degree. In 1947, Bernadette went to work for Dr. Vickers in Bangor ME and lived with her sister Teresa and husband Earl Hansen to help take care of their (then) six boys.
Bernadette married Burleigh G. Hunt in 1950 and lived in Sherman, Maine working on their family potato farm for 14 years. In 1964, they chose to move to Sacramento CA for employment opportunities and in 1977 moved to their retirement home in Lake of the Pines CA. Bernadette and Burleigh shared 53 years of marriage, until Burleigh passed into the arms of the Lord in 2003.
In Sacramento Bernadette worked as a Lab technician at McClellan Air Force Base for 25 years. Bernadette and Burleigh were avid travelers, spending nearly every summer traversing various routes across the country from California to Maine. One of their most memorable trips was driving north to Alaska with Burleigh s brother Otis and his wife Mary.
Bernadette Hunt was a beloved wife, mom, grandma, great-grandma, great-great grandmother, aunt, friend and so much more to a lot of people. The Hunt home was always open to family and friends and no one ever left hungry. Her apple pie is legendary and she will be fondly remembered for holding and rocking the babies, often referred to as the Baby whisperer .
In addition to her parents and her husband, Bernadette is predeceased by sisters, Marion Savard, Gertrude Conant, Teresa Hansen, Sr. Mary Luanus, R.S.M (Agnes), Rita Qualey, and Christina Heskett; and brothers, Louis and Albert Qualey.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Riley and husband Michael of Klamath Falls OR, son Thomas Hunt and wife Keely of Clovis CA; grandchildren, Sharon Hicks and husband Aaron of Rio Rancho NM, Heather Brown and husband Dan of Eastvale, CA; Miles Hunt and wife Roxy of San Mateo CA; 10 great-grandchildren Colby, Joshua and wife Dayla, Audrey, Jay, Jonah, Lucas, Jacob, Abigail, Johnny, and Adam; and 4 Great-great grandchildren- Aaliyah, Greyson, Josette and River and several nieces and nephews.
