It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bernadette Leinaala Haunani Manini, who left us on March 10, 2025, in her beloved hometown of
Honolulu, Hawaii. Born on December 18, 1953, Lei, as she was affectionately known, brought light and love to all who knew her during her remarkable 71 years on this earth.
Bernadette was a devoted daughter to her late parents, Elizabeth Leimomi Kamai Nahinu and Joseph Nahinu, and her adoptive parents John Elia Kamai Miha and Elizabeth Kahananui Ohia. She had a deep sense of family that resonated throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Jacob Lono Manini, who she married on July 13, 1974. Together, they shared a beautiful life filled with love and laughter. Lei was also preceded in death by her sister, Mamo Miha, and her brother, John Miha, who remain in our hearts alongside her.
Bernadette is survived by her loving children: her daughter, Jaylynn P. Akins, and son, Jake J. Manini. She was a proud grandmother to four grandchildren, whose lives she cherished immensely. Bernadette is also survived by her sisters, Yolanda Brown (Alan), Pua Miha, Pauline Morante (Clayton), Virginia "Tiny" Chuberko (Peter), and brother, Ulysses Nahinu. Additionally, she leaves behind her cherished niece and goddaughter, Tashiana "Hulali" Peyton (Clint), along with niece Trina Haunani Nunuha (Jonah), nephew Nathan Hilo (Nalani), and nephew Nicolas "Kaulana" Hilo (Shantell). Her legacy continues through her seven great grandnieces and five great grandnephews, as well as her 19 hanai siblings and many special family members and friends.
Bernadette's educational journey began at Lincoln Elementary School, followed by Stevenson Intermediate, and concluded with her graduation from Roosevelt High School. She was proud of her roots in this vibrant community, which shaped her into the compassionate and joyful woman she became. Her career at Roosevelt High School spanned 34 years, where she worked tirelessly as a custodian. She started in the Stadium and Pool Area and later transitioned to the gymnasium, becoming a beloved figure known affectionately as "Aunty" to countless students and faculty members. Her laughter and warm spirit created a welcoming environment, making her not just a custodian but a cherished member of the school family.
Lei was known for her giving nature and her infectious laughter. She had a unique ability to bring joy to those around her, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Her selflessness and kindness were hallmarks of her character, and she leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity.
