On January 27, 1959 in Brooklyn New York, John and Betty Hawkins were blessed with a beautiful baby girl they lovingly named Bernadette Celeste. Growing up, Bernadette was always interested in science; she had a curious mind always exploring different things.
Bernadette was a graduate with honors of the Andrew Jackson High School in
Queens, NY, Baruch College of City University of New York (BBA/Statistics & Computer Science), and Florida Institute of Technology (MS./Computer Information Systems).Bernadette was an accomplished and dedicated systems analyst, and worked for companies such as J.C. Penney, Equitable Life, Princeton Financial Systems, Alico (AIG), MetLife, W. R. Berkley Corporation and she also worked for BlackRock Inc. for over 10 years and held the position of Vice President.
Bernadette accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Canaan Baptist Church under the leadership of The Rev. Dr. Christopher A. Bullock.
Bernadette's passions were her family, reading and participating in her book club, the theater, her church, doing community service work, and travelling all over the world with family and friends.
Bernadette gained her wings on Thursday, December 18, 2025 after a long illness. She will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and working with her. Bernadette was preceded in death by her daughter Jonelle Nicole Weekes.
To carry on her precious memories and her legacy, she is survived by her father John Hawkins, her mother Betty Hawkins, her loving husband of 43 years, Herbert, her adoring daughter Jelyssa Simone, her precious granddaughter Nyla, her brother Gregory, sister -in-law Cleo, nieces Tyleah and Chevasia, sister-in-law, Shirley Joseph and a host of close relatives and friends.
We would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the many acts of kindness shown to the family. We are exceptionally grateful for the warm love you have shown us. Your words held us together, your arms have hugged us; your visits consoled us and your prayers have strengthened us, and for that we say thank you.
