Bernadine B. Carlson Sloan was born October 12, 1926 and passed away August 20, 2010 at the age of 83 years, 10 months, and 8 days. Bernadine was the daughter of Arthur Richard and Bernice (Stark) Carlson. She grew up on a farm near Millerton, Iowa and spent many years helping her parents with the farm work. As a young girl she enjoyed horseback riding, roller skating and playing basketball. Bernadine graduated from Millerton High School in 1943. She then earned a two-year teaching degree from Simpson College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Drake University. She taught elementary school at Cambria, Iowa and head-start at Corydon, Iowa. She was a member of the Millerton United Methodist Church and was always active in the UMW. Bernadine married Mardeth Dean Sloan on June 26, 1948. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. They were blessed with three sons. They were further blessed with ten grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. Bernadine leaves these family members to cherish her memory: two sons Donald Neal and friend Joyce of Des Moines, Iowa and Randy Allen and wife Pam of Russell, Iowa, grandchildren Chris, Brian, Tara, Chad, Cade, LeeAnn, Ray, Maggie, Bridie and Scott, sister Betty Carlson Hibbs and family of Oskaloosa, Iowa and sister-in-law Deloris Sloan Miner and husband Don and their family of Cambria, Iowa. Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mardeth, son Richard Bud “Spick� and brother Max Arthur Carlson.
