Bernard "Bernie" Bottema, age 79, of Ortonville, MN, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at his home.

No formal services will be held at this time.

Bernard Michael Bottema was born in Chicago, IL, to Cornelius and Ethel (Murray) Bottema. His family made their way back to Minnesota, where he grew up and embraced the values of hard work and dedication.

Bernie graduated from Benilde St. Margaret's in St. Louis Park, MN, in 1964. Following high school, he answered the call to serve his beloved North- side by joining the Minneapolis Police Department and embarking on a distinguished 30-year career for the city. He proudly dedicated his life to serving others, embodying the principles of justice, integrity, and bravery. It was a huge distinction, honor, and pride of Bernie’s to have earned the rank of Lieutenant.

Throughout his life, Bernie resided in various communities including Minneapolis, Brooklyn Park, Princeton, and Elk River. Upon his retirement, he purchased a serene home on the picturesque Peninsula of Big Stone Lake, where he found peace and fulfillment in his surroundings.

Bernie enjoyed two special marriages during his lifetime. He married Judith Louise Hill on April 10, 1965, in South Dakota. To this union, four children were born: Kenneth, Kim, Kelly, and Kris. Bernie later married Pamela Ann Melius (nee Foote), whose passing in 2024 left a profound impact on him. Their love stories were marked by companionship and mutual respect.

A kind-hearted soul, Bernard cherished meaningful conversations, particularly with his colleagues as they reminisced about their shared experiences in law enforcement. He took immense joy in creating beautiful Rosaries and sharing his faith with close friends, finding solace in both spirituality and fellowship.

Surviving Bernie are his daughters: Kim Grinnell of St. Cloud, MN; Kelly Bottema of Ortonville, MN; and Kris (Mike) Bonkowske of Princeton, MN; stepchildren: Carrie Melius of Mound, MN; and Joshua Melius of Elk River, MN; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his wife, Pamela; his son, Ken Bottema; and his parents, Cornelius and Ethel Bottema.
