Bernard Gentry Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brooks & White Funeral Home and Crematory - Roxboro on Oct. 6, 2022.
Bernard Kitchen Gentry, also known as "BK" and "Bunk", 96, died Monday, October 3, 2022. He was born in Person County to the late Watkins Gentry and Roxanna Buchanan Gentry. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Lee Turner Gentry, son, Bernard "Bernie" K. Gentry, Jr., brother Grady Gentry and sisters, Rachel Huff, Margaret Hicks and Betty Barton. He was a former tobacco farmer and a retired carpenter for Penny Long, Jessie Anderson & Son and Imperial Log Homes. Mr. Gentry had many interests and enjoyed gardening, hunting, gigging and cooking stews for family gatherings. Mr. Gentry was a musician, playing the guitar and singing with the "Buck Mountain Bluegrass Band" including Robert Slaughter, Hugh Ray Stewart and Earl Link. They performed on Roxboro cable TV, Radio Roxboro and at funerals and nursing homes.
Mr. Gentry instilled in his children the importance of good work ethics, work completed in a timely manner and with pride, which was passed down through generations. He was greatly admired as a caregiver for his son Bernie and wife Mary Lee. Mr. Gentry remained at home until June of this year, wanting to take care of himself. He took much pride and dignity doing for himself up until his death.
He is survived by his children, Joan G. Davis (Ken), Stuart Gentry (Susan), Craig Gentry (Kathy), grandchildren; Keith Davis, Joanna Davis, Stephen Gentry and Courtney Gentry (Derek); two sisters, Florence Perkins (Babe), and Fadine Porterfield; and many special nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held 2PM Monday at the Allensville United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Pastor Denny Freeland and the Rev. Jack Ruth, for family and close friends. Visitation will be held after the service and other times at the home of Joan G. Davis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Allensville United Methodist Church, 80 Dirgie Mine Rd. Roxboro, NC 27574.
