Bernard "Bernie" Lechman, 86, of Cumberland, MD passed away on February 27, 2026 at UPMC Western Maryland.

Bernie was born June 7, 1939 in Latrobe, PA to the late Joseph and Rosemarie Lechman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Lechman II, and sister, Rosemary "Posy" Jim.

He attended Latrobe High School and graduated from Kiski Prep School in Saltsburg, PA. He then graduated from Duquesne University College of Pharmacy in Pittsburgh, PA. A few years later, he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he served as a pharmacist until his discharge.

A devoted member of his local veterans' community, he later served as Chaplain and, at another time, Commander of the Fort Cumberland American Legion, Post 13.

Bernie worked as a pharmacist at Walmart in LaVale, MD for 19 years until his retirement.

Bernie will be remembered for his sense of humor; his work ethic; his love of family, God, and Country; and his many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his daughter, Rosemarie Fitch (Gary); grandson, Reilly Fitch; daughter Julianne Lechman; and a brother, Michael Lechman (Linda); as well his extended family including nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Friday, March 6th from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 pm at St. Mary Catholic Church, 301 E Oldtown Rd, Cumberland with Fr. Mark Carter OFM Cap. officiating.

Following the mass, interment will be in the MD Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone, MD.

Military honors will be accorded by his brothers with the American Legion Post 13 Honor Guard.

The family requests memorial contributions be directed to the Fort Cumberland American Legion Post 13 (www.al13frtcmd.org/), PO Box 1740, Cumberland, MD 21501-1740; or to the charity of your choice.
