Bernard Morgan Obituary

Colonel Bernard "Bernie" Stanley Morgan Jr., USAF (Ret.), a distinguished engineer, educator, and veteran, passed away peacefully. He was 98 years old.
Born on June 30, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York, to Bernard Stanley Morgan Sr. and Helen Starstrom, Bernie's remarkable life was marked by intellectual achievement, service to country, faith, and devotion to family.
Growing up in Brooklyn, Bernie helped his father, Bert S. Morgan Sr., in his photography business. From an early age, he demonstrated both technical skill and curiosity - even helping to develop the negatives for the famous Triple Dead Heat photograph at Aqueduct Racetrack on June 16, 1944, one of racing's most iconic images.
A gifted student, Bernie graduated as valedictorian from Jamaica High School in 1945, where he was voted "Most Likely to Succeed" and "Most Studious." Shortly after attending Georgetown University, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy during the final weeks of World War II. Serving as a Seaman First Class, he joined the Navy's elite EDDY electronics program, specializing in radar systems.
In 1947, Bernie earned a Secretary of the Navy appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he excelled academically, and became a distinguished graduate. Upon graduation in 1951, his career path led him to the newly formed U.S. Air Force, where he began decades of pioneering work in guided missile and aeronautical engineering.
That same year, he married the love of his life, Nancy Marie Coyle, beginning a 70+ year journey of love and partnership. Together they raised five children - Marianne, Bernie, Jim, Steven, and Kevin - moving across the country as Bernie's Air Force career advanced.
Over the next three decades, Colonel Morgan served at key Air Force bases across the United States - from Keesler and Lowry to Chanute, Patrick, and Wright-Patterson - contributing to America's early missile programs and aviation technology. He earned two master's degrees in Aeronautical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Instrumental Engineering from the University of Michigan. His thesis research led to a seminal paper on Decoupling of Automatic Control Systems. It is referenced in the Control Theory literature as "Morgan's Problem."
He went on to teach Aeronautical Engineering as an Assistant Professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy, influencing generations of officers. His leadership and technical expertise earned him steady promotions, culminating in the rank of Colonel and his later role as Director of Laboratories at Hanscom Air Force Base in Massachusetts.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1979, Bernie continued his lifelong dedication to education and innovation. He served as Vice President of Engineering at BDM in Huntsville, Alabama, and later taught engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville before joining Teledyne Brown as Deputy Director of Research where he worked for almost two decades before retiring again.
Bernie also dedicated his time and talents to his faith community. A devout Catholic, he served Holy Spirit Catholic Church and John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville with unwavering commitment. From 1980 to 1988, he chaired the Education Committee, and from 1988 to 2025, he faithfully served as Chairman of the Parish Finance Committee. The parish family remains deeply grateful for his decades of service and leadership.
Beyond his professional and community life, Bernie always had a happy smile for everyone. He was known for his warmth, wit, and wide-ranging interests. He loved coaching youth soccer, gardening, helping people with their taxes, and never turned down a breakfast of eggs and sausage - or a handful of Oreos. He also loved playing Fantasy Football with his family and took great pride in studying teams each week to craft a winning lineup. His favorite travels included a Hawaiian cruise, an Ireland bus tour, and attending the Oberammergau Passion Play.
He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy, their five children, 12 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren, as well as a legacy of faith, curiosity, and kindness that continues through all who knew him.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all friends and caregivers who offered their prayers, love, and support. Bernie's life of service, faith, and love will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him. He wanted to be remembered for his love of God, as a loving father and for his service to our country.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home, with a Rosary to follow at 6. The funeral will be at 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers and plants, memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul of Holy Spirit Church, 625 Airport Drive, Huntsville, AL 35802.

So many memories of Bernie! A wonderful man, generous, kind, and a strong warrior for the Lord. He was our neighbor for over twenty years. Mike and I went on that Ireland trip, I used to walk at Parkway mall with him. He sponsored my Elizabeth´s confirmation and we have so many memories of Church gatherings.
We loved Bernie and considered him our adopted grandfather for our three daughters.
He and Nancy were our role models as we raised our family.
His was a life well lived and we are blessed to have had him in our lives.
We are sending Prayers for Nancy, and the entire family.
