Bernard Paul Wellhausen, known to all as "Bernie", a lifelong resident of Mount Clemens, Michigan, passed away on Monday, July 5, 2021, less than two weeks away from his 96th birthday. He was born in Mt. Clemens on July 18, 1925 to the late Arthur and Gladys (Forton) Wellhausen. On January 17, 1947, he was married to the former Marguerite Bland. Together they spent over 62 years in marriage. Mrs. Wellhausen preceded her husband in death on December 8, 2009.
Mr. Wellhausen proudly served in the Army during World War II, and later in the U.S. Coast Guard. A Mt. Clemens native, Mr. Wellhausen took great pride in supporting his locality through his careers at Vernier & Dedenbach Grocery Store, Mt. Clemens water treatment and other maintenance, and perhaps his proudest, a volunteer firefighter for the city. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter Catholic church, serving the local community as an usher for over 73 years. As a member of several local organizations – Goodfellows, Old Crowd, Metropolitan Club, Knights of Columbus, AMVETS and VFW to name a few – he grew to know, love, and touch the hearts of many other proud Mt. Clemens and Macomb County citizens throughout his life.
Mr. Wellhausen leaves behind his children Linda (Dave) Coutts, Nancy Wellhausen, Denise (Gary) Thieman, Daniel Wellhausen, Mark Wellhausen, Gary (Margie) Wellhausen, Julie (James) Hilton, and Susan (Donald) LaRue. He was the proud grandpa to Robert, Cara (Sanjeev), Justin, Brian, Nicholas, Christopher (Sarah), Katie (Daniel), Curtis, and Evan, and the loving great grandpa of Nisha, Anika, Isabella, Eric, Jackson, and Norah. Many nieces, nephews, and extended family also survive. In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Wellhausen is preceded in death by his children Debra (Robert) Malear and Mary Nolan.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 8, 2021 from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 South Main Street, Mt. Clemens. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. (instate 11:00) at St. Peter Catholic Church, 95 Market Street, Mt. Clemens. Burial will follow at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Bernie may be addressed to the Goodfellows, PO Box 421, Mt. Clemens, MI 48046.
