Bernardino Arcaya Alvarez

Bernardino "Burt" Arcaya Alvarez, a man of profound kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his family, peacefully passed away on July 10, 2024, in Maryland while visiting loved ones. He was a pillar of strength and compassion, leaving behind a legacy of love and service that touched the lives of many.
Born on May 20, 1940, in Gumaca, Quezon Province, Philippines, Burt was the beloved son of Maru Arcaya and Wenceslao Alvarez. He was a caring brother to Glenda, Lorna, Raul, Eduardo, and Felimon. Burt married the love of his life, Sonia, on May 20, 1970, celebrating a union marked by devotion and mutual respect.
Burt was a devoted family man, who immigrated with his loved ones to Rochester Hills, Michigan, in November 1992. He was the proud father of Faye (Jay) Elpedes and Paul Brian (Heather) Alvarez, and a doting grandfather to Isabella Elpedes. He cherished his grand dogs, Lola Grace Elpedes and Daniel Ramone Tanafranca Alvarez, bringing joy to their lives as they did to his.
Burt's career was a testament to his passion for education and mentorship. He served as a Specials Teacher, Basketball Coach, and Drum and Bugle Corps instructor at Gumaca West Elementary School. Upon moving to the United States, he dedicated himself to Eagle-Ottawa LLC, contributing his hard work and expertise.
Burt was a man of few words, yet his actions spoke volumes. Known for his nurturing spirit and selflessness, he made sacrifices to support his siblings and provide a better life for his children. His kind heart and happy demeanor endeared him to all who knew him, leaving a lasting impression of love and compassion.
Burt will be deeply missed by his family, friends, nieces, nephews, and extended family members whose lives he enriched with his gentle soul and caring nature. His legacy of kindness and responsibility will continue to inspire and guide those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
A memorial service to celebrate Burt's life will be held on Friday, July 19 at Potere-Modetz Funeral Home located at 339 Walnut Boulevard, Rochester, Michigan. Viewing Services will be held from 3-8 p.m. July 19 followed by a mass on July 20th at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's of the Hills Catholic Church at 2675 John R. Rd. Rochester Hills Michigan.
