Obituary published on Legacy.com by Snowden Funeral Home - Rockville on Nov. 6, 2025.
Bernice Worthy Everett was born on May 22, 1937 in Sanford, North Carolina to Mattie Worthy. She was the identical twin of her younger sister, Bernetha Wesley Lyle. They were born only five minutes apart which cemented a lifelong bond.
The twins moved to Greenburgh, New York in 1950 where they attended Greenburgh Junior High School and White Plains High School. During these years, Bernice was known for her outgoing personality and sense of humor. She took pride in being a member of the cheerleading squad and the drill team. In addition to her extracurricular high school activities, she worked at Trencher's Bridal Shop in White Plains as a salesperson. Her relationship with her sister also evolved and she became a sounding board and source of advice for Bernetha who she fondly referred to as "Sis."
After graduating from High School in 1955, she accepted a position as an administrative assistant at Grassland Hospital in Valhalla, New York. In 1957 she met William Everett, and they married that same year. After welcoming their only child into the world, Kathy Everett-Gaines, on May 8, 1961, she left Grassland Hospital and became a stay-at-home mom. After three years, she decided to resume work and joined Maryknoll Fathers & Brothers in Ossining, New York as a computer input technician. Her family and friends recall that during her 38-year tenure she earned the respect and admiration of her co-workers and upper management while forming long lasting friendships. Her strong work ethic and dedication led to her pursuit of a second career in the field of culinary arts. She successfully operated a catering business from 1970 to 2010.
Bernice was a devoted member of the Eastern Stars. After joining Pentecost Assembly No. 86, she held various positions including Worthy Matron. She will be remembered for her hard work and dedication.
Bernice was a woman of diverse interests which included reading, cooking, bowling, music, and theatre. She loved the experience of attending live concerts. One of her fondest memories was accompanying Bernetha, and her daughter, Kathy, to a Smokie Robinson concert. Music never failed to lift her spirits. She would often start her day with "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown. She also enjoyed watching tennis, golf, football, and boxing.
Her loving and generous spirit will be missed by her devoted daughter, Kathy Everett-Gaines (Dwayne E. Gaines, Esq.) of Silver Spring, Maryland, a host of cousins, and friends.
Her passing on November 2, 2025, approximately 4 months after the death of her sister, Bernetha Wesley Lyle, underscores the depth of their connection. Bernice can now join her in the journey for peace and happiness.
A memorial service to honor the life of Bernice Worthy Everett will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Snowden Funeral Home, P.A., located at 246 N. Washington Street,
