Bert Sheridan Ryno passed away March 29, 2025 after a brief stay at the Winner Regional Long Term Care Center. Bert was born July 1, 1934 in Rushville, NE to Ralph and Neva (Eaton) Ryno. He attended grade school at the Cody Township school and graduated from Wood High School in 1952. On June 14, 1953 he married Gloria Swanson. Bert and Gloria enjoyed 59 years together until Gloria passed on June 13, 2012.
Bert was drafted into the military August 4, 1955 and served until June 20, 1957. He talked about being in a line with other new recruits and at the end of the line they were instructed to go left or right, one direction took you overseas to Korea and the other direction kept you stateside. Dad served as a military policeman at Ft. Leavenworth, during that time he earned a black belt in Judo, a sharpshooter badge and a Good Conduct Medal. He and Gloria made many lifelong friends during this time and managed to stay in contact with them up until recently. After his service time ended, they moved to Rapid City for a short time then returned to farm life north of Wood. Now it was time to add to the family Tamara (Tami) was born March 29th followed 3 years later by Shane Scott June 6th.
Bert loved the farming/ranching life and especially the "family" of a rural community. The spring brandings, harvesting the crops, following the kids in sports, he looked forward to them all. Bert served on several boards and committees over the years, he was a member of the Wood UCC, Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and the EI Riad Shrine. He and Gloria belonged to the Frontier Twirlers Square Dance Club and enjoyed several trips with the group to festivals and even ventured to Switzerland! The group was known to bust into a dance at a Burger King, in a parking lot, hotel lobby – bet that raised a few eyebrows. A few years later they traveled with a group of friends to Vermont, made it to Branson and headed to Wyoming as often as they could.
Several years ago, Cherry Todd Electric was celebrating an anniversary for when electrical power made it to rural counties, Dad was interviewed and had his photo on a billboard on highway 83, he was recently interviewed for a newspaper article in the Mellette County paper entitled Elderly Treasures, (the kids might have been a little nervous about this), he greatly enjoyed both recognitions.
Bert is survived by his daughter Tami Comp (Curt), son Shane (Sherry Harter), grandchildren Hiddy Heinz (Richard), Britni Halverson (Jon), Courtney Lambert (Brandon), Chase (Bridget Carlson), and Shelby Fallon (Lloyd) and 7 great-grandchildren with another one expected in July. Brother Larry (Nell Heying) and sister-in-law Sandra Collins plus many nieces and nephews.
Bert is preceded in death by his wife Gloria, parents Ralph and Neva, in-laws Ed and Fern (Clapper) Swanson, infant grandson Dustin Comp, brother Bob and sister-in-law Babe Ryno, sister-in-law Wendy Ryno, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Norma and Paul Bennett.
In Lieu of flowers please direct donations to the Wood Volunteer Fire Department.
