Bertha Barr Obituary

Betty Barr passed away on February 28, 2026, surrounded by her family at home in Upperco, MD, under hospice care at 93 years old. She was born in Aldie, VA on October 17, 1932, to the late John Francis Wilson and Margaret Estelle (Stains) Wilson.

She was one of seven children, all who predeceased her, Dot, Jim, Rose, Kate, Ellie and Pat. Her father passed away when she was five years old. Her mover then moved the family to the Mt. Washington area of Baltimore to live with her Aunt Grace and Uncle Carroll and their six children. She attended schools in Baltimore City, Mt. Washington #21, Locust Point #76 and the Ready School for Girls. She later attended business/secretary classes at night.

Betty worked for the Maryland Casualty Insurance Company, Baltimore, MD for 15 years, for Dr. Gabby of Sinai Hospital.

She met and married James Russell Barr in 1950 at Howard Park United Methodist Church. Together they bought their home on LaPlata Avenue (Medfield), Baltimore and were soon blessed by one son, Stuart Alan Barr. After more than 30 years there, the built their home in Upperco, MD. Betty then worked for Dr. Toth, DDS in Glyndon, MD for many years as a secretary.

She and her husband attended Wesley United Methodist Church, Hampstead, MD until he passed in 1996. She remained active in the church for 40 years. She served at the soup kitchen, bazaars, welcoming committee, funeral luncheons, church dinners and visiting shut ins over the past 30 years until December 2025 due to her failing health. She also volunteered for the Boy Scouts, NESAP, meals on wheels and the Board of Child Care.

Betty enjoyed traveling with her favorite niece Sharon Pierson of Westminster, MD. Bowling in bowling leagues in Pikesville and playing cards with her two groups of ladies well into her 90's.

She leaves to behind her son Alan Barr and daughter-in-law Cindy Barr of Upperco, grandson Michael Haines and wife Christina Haines and great grandchildren Lily, Levi and Logan Haines of Westminster and grandson Matthew Haines of Reisterstown. She adored her great-grandchildren who brightened her days. She also leaves behind her special kitty 'Sabrina', many nephews, nieces and families along the with so many friends.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Friday, March 6, 2026. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Finksburg.

Those desiring may make memorial donations in her name to Wesley United Methodist Church, 3239 Carrollton Road, Hampstead, MD 21074 or to BridgingLife's Dove House, c/o: Development Office, 200 Memorial Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157.
