Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legacy Funeral Center - Scott Chapel from Jul. 26 to Jul. 27, 2025.
Bertha Cherry, a remarkable woman whose strength, grace, and warmth left a lasting legacy, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, in
Jeffersonville, Indiana, surrounded by the love of her family. She was 96.
Born on February 13, 1929, in Nashville, Tennessee, Bertha was a force of nature from the start. By the age of 22, she had already embraced motherhood with open arms, raising five children and building a home filled with love, laughter, and resilience. A true homemaker in every sense of the word, Bertha's hands were rarely still-she sewed beautiful clothes for her daughters, crocheted lovingly for her grandchildren, and tackled household projects with a determination that would put modern DIY enthusiasts to shame. Long before it became a trend, Bertha lived a life of creativity, self-reliance, and purpose.
Her strength and independence remained constant throughout her life. At 92 years old, she was still mowing grass with a push mower-an enduring testament to her vigor and spirit.
Bertha's greatest joy was her family, and her legacy lives on through them. She is survived by her loving children: Clifton Douglas Cherry (Sheree), Ricky Howard Cherry (Dana), and Joyce Elaine Dwyer; 15 cherished grandchildren; 29 beloved great-grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, and her dear cousin, Larry Bowman (Evelyn). Her devotion to each of them was boundless, and her memory will live on in the stories they share and the love they carry forward.
She is reunited in peace with her loving husband, Clarence Cherry, parents, Loy and Gladys Leuthold, her precious daughters, Nancy Sue Smith and Debbie Lynn Voyles, infant brother, Frances Johnson, son-in-law, Paul Dwyer and grandchildren, Marla Joy Cherry and Michael Paul Dwyer.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the many caregivers and the compassionate team at Hospice who provided Bertha with such loving and dignified care. Your kindness and support brought comfort and peace during her final days, and will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the
Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or to the
charity of your choice.
Visitation to honor and celebrate Bertha's life will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Legacy Funeral Center, 921 Main Street,
Jeffersonville, Indiana. A funeral service will follow on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the same location, with burial to take place at Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
Bertha Cherry lived a life marked by quiet strength, unconditional love, and extraordinary devotion to her family. She leaves behind a legacy as beautiful and enduring as the many things she made with her hands-and the countless hearts she touched with her soul.
