CAHABA MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL: Announce with deepest sympathy the passing of Mrs. Bertha Mae Dennis on Friday, February 27, 2026.
BERTHA'S LIFE STORY: Sis. Bertha Mae Dennis was born on February 25, 1953, in
Brent, Alabama, to the late Catherine Leverette and the late Robert Frank Hornbuckle. On
February 27, 2026, surrounded by love and the promises of God, she peacefully entered eternal rest. From an early age, Bertha Mae confessed Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized, beginning a lifelong journey of faith, devotion, and service. Her relationship with God was the foundation of her life. She became a faithful and devoted member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in
Brent, Alabama, where she worshiped and served wholeheartedly. Later, she relocated to
Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she united with Mt. Sinai Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Thomas. There, she continued her steadfast service and found great joy serving as head of the Culinary and Fellowship Ministry. Through her hands, meals were prepared; through her heart,
fellowship was nurtured. She did more than cook-she created spaces of comfort, love, and unity, blessing countless lives with her warm spirit and servant's heart. Bertha Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Jonah Leverette Sr.; her beloved husband, Henry Lewis Dennis; her cherished daughter, Angela Holman; and her siblings, Randy Leverette, Ada Hornbuckle, and Gregory Hornbuckle. She leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted daughter, Ann Stabler (Nelson Stacy) of
Fort Wayne, Indiana; five beloved grandchildren, Crystal Stabler, Kendrick Stabler, Jakeya Stabler, John Broadnax and Andre Holman, Jr. of
Fort Wayne, Indiana; fifteen treasured great-grandchildren who brought joy and pride to her heart.
She also leaves to cherish her memory three loving sisters, Brenda Alhart (Fred), Joanne Hornbuckle, and Patricia Griffin, all of Youngstown, Ohio; nine brothers, James Jones (Mary) of
Fort Wayne, Indiana; Jonah Leverette Jr. (Barbara), Sammy Leverette (Wanda), Danny Leverette (Rebecca), Andy Leverette, and Dewayne Leverette (Lakeisha), all of Huntsville, Alabama, Otis Driver of Simpsonville, South Carolina; Robert Hornbuckle (Georgia) and Joseph Hornbuckle of Youngstown, Ohio; along with her beloved Aunt, Mattie Driver. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Pearlie Rhine of Centreville, Alabama, and Ethel Edwards of
Fort Wayne, Indiana, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives she touched in countless ways. Bertha Mae will forever be remembered for her unwavering faith, her quiet strength, her nurturing spirit, and the deep love she poured into her family and church community. Her life was a beautiful reflection of grace, resilience, and devotion to God. Though she is no longer with us in body, her love, her lessons, and her legacy will continue to live on in
every life she touched.
