Bertha “Bert” Maude Downing, age 73, a wife, mother, and cherished member of her community, passed away on February 26, 2026, at Cherry County Hospital in Valentine, Nebraska.
Born on August 20, 1952, in Alliance, Nebraska, Bertha was the daughter of Ray and Leon Bassett. She graduated from Hyannis High School and subsequently embraced a life dedicated to her family and the nurturing of the land.
On June 11, 1970, Bert married her husband, Mick, and together they embarked on a lifelong journey managing their family ranch. This venture reflected her unwavering commitment to not only caring for the land but also fostering an environment of love and hard work. Her vibrant spirit was evident in every aspect of her life, as she was known for her motto, "Life is Good." Bert was not just a rancher; she was a storyteller whose engagement with others brought joy and wisdom to those around her.
Bert’s interests were diverse. She enjoyed raising chickens, gardening, and living the ranch lifestyle, particularly in the beautiful sandhills. Her culinary skills shone through in her cooking and canning of the produce she lovingly cultivated. An avid photographer, Bert enjoyed sharing her snapshots of rural life on Facebook, earning the title of the “Sandhills Snapper.”
Her dedication extended beyond her immediate family; she was well known for her generosity, often helping others with her time and resources. Bert’s love for her family was evident in everything she did, and her proudest accomplishment was undoubtedly the strong bonds she forged with them.
She is survived by her husband Mick, son Mickey Jr. and wife Julie Downing of Chadron, son Gordon and wife Kris Downing of Norfolk, five grandchildren, two sisters, Ruth Kuchel and Carolyn Jara, and three brothers, Jim Cook, Francis Bassett, and Robert Bassett.
