Bertha "Joy" (Fleming) Gortner, 79 of Zanesville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Genesis Hospice Morrison House with her loving family by her side.
Joy was born on March 24, 1945 in Zanesville. She is the daughter of the late Harmon and Zelma (Longshore) Stotts. She attended the Zanesville First Church of the Nazarene, where she played the piano for over fifty years. Joy worked and retired from American General/Springleaf Finance in 2012. Joy loved helping out others and volunteering at Christ's Table once a week. She also enjoyed watching The Golden Girls, putting together puzzles, and sewing.
Joy is survived by her son, Matt (Tennille) Fleming; her grandchildren, Trent Fleming and Kyleigh Fleming; her siblings, Nora May Davis, Wayne Ellsworth Stotts, Daniel (Jook) Prouty Stotts Sr.; her special kitties, Tuxie and Butterball; as well as many sibling-in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to her parents, Joy is preceded in death by her first husband, Robert D. Fleming, who passed away on December 1, 1995; her second husband, Wayne E. Gortner, who passed away on May 19, 2009; her son, Michael T. Fleming, who passed away on March 3, 2012; her siblings, Essie Marie (Kenneth) Davis, Harmon Dale Stotts, Corrina Faye Holman, John Paul Stotts, Gladys Elaine Peterson, and Zelma Josephine (Charlie) Barner; her special sister-in-law, Nancy Stotts; as well as her special friend, Judy Hearn.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like for donations to be made in Joy's honor to Christ's Table, where she loved to spend her free time, at 28 South 6th Street, Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
Visitations for Joy will be held from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at the Farus Funeral Home of Duncan Falls. A funeral service for Joy will be held at 1 pm on the same day. Pastor Steve Dupler and Reverend Jim Miller will officiate the service. Joy will be laid to rest in the Duncan Falls Cemetery.
