Bertram (Bert) Sabo Jr. was the quiet, steady center of his family and friends-always present, always dependable, and always giving more of himself than he ever asked in return. On August 20, 2025, Bert went home to be with our heavenly Father, at the age of 70 after facing pancreatic cancer with remarkable strength and courage. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and a lifelong member of the Ventnor City Fire Department family.
Bert lived a life rooted in family, faith, and service. In 1977, he answered the call to join the Ventnor City Fire Department, beginning a career that would span more than three decades. With dedication and perseverance, he rose through the ranks and, in 2005, was promoted to Chief. Known affectionately to many as "Boston Bert," he led with fairness, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to both his firefighters and his community. Calm under pressure, he guided his department through emergencies or the routine calls of a shore town, always prioritizing safety and preparedness. He believed deeply in lifelong learning, eagerly pursuing courses and training to sharpen his own skills while encouraging his firefighters to do the same.
Beyond the work, Bert treasured the firehouse brotherhood. He valued the camaraderie of shared meals, laughter, and the occasional prank, and he made sure the department felt like family. He built traditions that carried beyond the firehouse walls-backyard barbecues, pool parties, and unforgettable canoe trips. True to who he was, Bert showed up wherever he was needed, whether it meant building a deck, remodeling a home, or lending a strong hand. He asked for nothing in return-just a warm hug or a firm handshake was more than enough.
Outside of the fire service, Bert's curiosity and creativity flourished in his woodworking. A self-taught craftsman, he poured love into each piece he created, beginning with hand-carved angels. His signature "Strong Angels" became symbols of comfort and hope for countless people, each one offered freely from his heart. Even during his illness, Bert continued to carve and share these gifts with the doctors and nurses who cared for him, never missing an opportunity to express gratitude and kindness.
Above all, Bert's greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his loving wife, Fran; his children, Scott (JoAnn) Sabo and Amy Allen; and his four cherished grandchildren-Marisa Allen, Jacob Sabo, Christopher Allen, and Nicholas Sabo. He is also survived by his beloved sisters, Julie Sprindzunas and Brenda (Chris) Kenny and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, stretching from Massachusetts to the Jersey Shore to Florida. His circle of friends, including the brothers of the Ventnor City Fire Department, held a special place in his heart.
