Bessie Duncan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Howard K. Hill Funeral Services - New Haven on Dec. 17, 2025.
Bessie Viola Duncan departed this mortal life on Thursday, December 11, 2025. She was born on May 11, 1919, in Charleston, SC to the late Langster Baylor and Adele Wilkins.
Bessie attended Troup Middle School and was a graduate of James Hillhouse High School, Class of 1938. She was filled with knowledge, so it was no surprise that she pursued her passion and obtained a degree in Nursing and retired after 20 years of service from the Manhattan Psychiatric Ward in New York City and returned to her hometown of New Haven, CT.
Bessie lived her life unapologetically and authentically as possible. She was honest, she was tough, she was loving, she was "Nana" and "BB" as she was affectionately called.
Bessie's legacy of having a firm loving hand will always be cherished. She was a member of St. Paul UAME Church, New Haven, CT for over 40 years. Her passion for helping others was evident in her work serving on the Nurses Board, Missionary Board and Stewardess Board in the church. She was also a member of the Senior Choir. During her time in New York City, she was a member of the Manhattan Order of Eastern Stars Chapter. She was also a member of the Dixwell Senior Organization and was presented with multiple awards during her membership.
Bessie was predeceased by her parents, Langster Baylor and Adele Wilkins; son, Stephen Elias Duncan; sisters, Harriet Davis, Anne Bellinger, and Dora Moore; and former husband, Leroy Duncan.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her grandchildren, Towanna Duncan - New Haven, CT and Jamal Pearson (Laura) - Vernon, CT; 3 bonus granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; as well as a host of relatives and friends.
Bessie will be missed not only by those listed but a host of family and friends who loved her more than words can express.
