Betsy Ann Merkel

Born in Columbus, Nebraska, on August 28, 1948, she was one of 3 children of Frank and Rose Etta Baird. She passed away from Sun City West, Arizona, on October 17, 2025. Betsy was a devoted mother of 3 and wife of John Merkel for 54 years. She graduated the University of Iowa with a degree in education, emphasizing Physical Education. After she married John in July 1971 they moved frequently around the country as he pursued his career in the Air Force. During this time Betsy indulged her love of animals by breeding and raising Boston Terrier and Rottweiler puppies. Betsy also played and coached soccer at youth and high school levels. After John retired, they moved to Sun City West to be closer to her aging parents, and Betsy joined him in owning and operating a pet store. After 11 years they closed the store and joined the Sheriff's Posse of Sun City West where she was instrumental in organizing and expanding the posse's contribution to the annual Sheriff's picnic at Nadaburg Elementary School. She is survived by her husband, John, her brothers Craig Baird and twin Bob Baird, her children, Samantha, Jenni, and Jeff, and 7 grandchildren. A memorial Service will be held Monday, November 3rd, at 11AM at Camino Del Sol Funeral Home in Sun City West.
