Today, we gather to celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring
legacy of Bette Cooper, a dedicated advocate, a proud member of
the Labor movement, and a beacon of inspiration for all who had the
privilege of knowing her. Bette is survived by her son, Michael
Christopher Cooper of Plymouth, Indiana.
Bette's journey began in the picturesque landscapes of Harlan
County, KY, where she was born. Her early years were marked by the
untimely loss of her father, a coal miner, which led her and her
mother to relocate to Elizabethton, TN, seeking solace and kinship
with family.
Growing up against the backdrop of the majestic Blue Ridge
Mountains, Bette's spirit was shaped by the beauty and resilience of
the region. Bette found purpose in helping the people she loved. In
her first job out of high school, Bette spearheaded a campaign in her
local paper, resulting in the development of a brand new hospital in
the region.
A fervent Democrat in a predominantly Republican community,Bette's strong convictions and unwavering principles guided her path. In her pursuit of purpose and belonging, she ventured to Washington, DC, where she found her calling amidst the bustling corridors of activism.
Bette's career journey led her to Merkle Press, where her editorial
prowess shone as she crafted publications for labor unions. Her
passion for effecting change found a home at the National Council of
Senior Citizens (NCSC), an organization that united seniors across the
nation in political and legislative advocacy. At NCSC, Bette's
eloquence and dedication flourished as she lent her pen to the
monthly newspaper, Senior Citizen News, leaving an indelible mark
on the discourse surrounding senior issues.
In the year 2001, Bette's commitment to seniors and her dedication
to the Labor movement converged as she joined the newly formed
Alliance for Retired Americans. A new affiliate of the AFL-CIO, this
organization became a canvas for Bette's transformative work. Her
creation of a weekly newsletter, reaching tens of thousands every
Friday, stands as a testament to her enduring impact on the lives of
countless seniors and advocates.
A proud member of the Labor movement, Bette's voice echoed loudly with the declaration, "We are Labor!" Her fearless stance in the face of opposition and her leadership in defending liberal values exemplify her unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.
Beyond her profound contributions, Bette's colleagues fondly
remember her for her dry sense of humor, a bright light amidst the
serious work she undertook. Her love for family gatherings, her
enjoyment of pumpkin pie, and her cherished moments during
Christmas Eve church services reflect a woman who cherished life's
simple pleasures and reveled in shared joy.
Bette's love for Blowing Rock, NC, nestled high in the embrace of the
Blue Ridge Mountains, was a reflection of her soul's sanctuary. As she
roamed these hills and valleys, she found respite, beauty, and
tranquility - a reflection of her innermost being.
Today, as we bid farewell to Bette, we honor a life that exemplified
unwavering dedication to making a difference. Her legacy lives on in
the causes she held dear and the countless lives she touched. Let us
carry forward her passion, her commitment, and her spirit as we
continue to advocate for a better world, just as she did. Bette
Cooper's indomitable spirit will forever inspire us to stand up for what is right and to forge ahead in the face of adversity, echoing her
resolute declaration, "We are Labor!" May her soul find eternal peace
amidst the serene beauty of Blowing Rock, her spirit forever soaring
in the mountains she loved.
