Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barbara Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, Inc - Centre Hall on Oct. 27, 2023.
Betty L. (Kitchen) Bartges, 98, longtime resident of Madisonburg, formerly of Lock Haven, joined her husband in eternal rest on Friday, October 6, 2023, after succumbing to the devestation of Lewy Body Dementia. Born on January 12, 1925, in Beech Creek, she was the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Edith (Wagner) Kitchen. On February 7, 1947, in Millheim, she married the love of her life, Benjamin E. Bartges, who preceded her in death on October 24, 1993.
Betty attended schools in Mill Hall, Flemington, and Lock Haven. During WWII, from 1941 until 1951, she worked at Sylvania in Mill Hall. In 1958, she started working for the Penns Valley School District in the elementary cafeteria then transferred to the high school cafeteria as a cook and occasional server. She retired in 1987. She was a longtime member of the First Church of Christ in Lock Haven and then later became a member of the Coburn United Methodist Church when the travels to Lock Haven began getting difficult for her.
Betty was a Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, Centre Hall Chapter #207, that currently meets in Lewistown. She had just celebrated her 50th anniversary with the Easter Star. She enjoyed spending time reading, walking, completing word puzzles, and going to the Penns Valley Senior Center. Each year she looked forward to attending the great Grange Fair, enjoying the food and the opportunity to socialize with her friends and family. Her favorite past time was creating memories with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a determined, hard working, and independent woman until Lewy Body Dementia took that from her. Those that knew her, loved and adored her. Maybe it was because she was a joyful person, who always tried to see the positive silver lining in each situation. To honor Betty and the way she lived life, we ask you to find the positive in each day, no matter how hard and overwhelmingly difficult that may seem.
Betty is survived by her two daughters, Shirley B. Corman and her husband, Thomas, of Spring Mills and Phyllis J. Kernan and her husband, John, of Loganton; four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
Along with her husband and parents, Betty was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Melanie Bartges and three siblings, Joseph Kitchen, Anna Seybold, and Louella Shaffer. She was the last of her generation.
Following Betty's wishes, all services will be held privately. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at the West Central Cemetery in Madisonburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the West Central Cemetery Association, c/o Sue Long, PO Box 30, Madisonburg, PA 16853.
