Betty Black (Canada) Obituary

Betty M (Canada) Black was born to the union of Clarence Canada Sr and Marie Canada on August 12, 1942 in Converse, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Clarence. Betty attended schools in the Kansas City School District, graduating from Manual High School in 1960. While in school she took up the trade of Cosmetology. Betty was a licensed Cosmetologist for over 60 years. She was the Owner and Operator of Betty’s House of Style”.

Betty was united in marriage to Clyde Gentry and to this union their daughter Sherry was born. This marriage was later dissolved. She later married Burnnie Black and to this union their daughter Bernadette was born. Burnnie later preceded her in death. Her life was enriched by three more daughters, Venessa, Carla and Dominique. Mother Black had a heart for God even as a child. She attended church even if it meant going alone at times. Betty was baptized in Jesus Name and filled with the Holy Ghost at Christ Temple Pentecostal Church (now Victorious Life Church) under the pastorate of Bishop Lee A. Tolbert Sr, and later Bishop Mark C. Tolbert. Sis. Black was licensed and ordained under the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW). She worked in various ministries in the church. They included but were not limited to, Assistant Pastor, Board Member, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member, VBS Teacher, Missionary Dept and the list goes on. Mother Black would often call all night prayer and shut-ins at the church. Mother Black held offices in the Northwestern District Council (now HACC) Home and Foreign Missions Auxiliaries. She was a true servant in so many ways.

Mother Black used every opportunity to witness and get people saved. But her greatest call was that of an Intercessor/Prayer Warrior. She was over the Prayer ministry praying every Wednesday afternoon at the church. She loved going to Prayer Band as they would go from house to house praying and testifying of the goodness of the Lord. The anointing on her life to pray you through kept many folks from hell and jail. She would tell you the truth in love even if you didn’t want to hear it. She was more concerned about your soul than your feelings. She would always say, “Jesus is on His way back”. Mother Black wanted to tell everyone about Jesus, whether young or old. She started a little children’s ministry in her home called the Big A club. She taught the children about Jesus. Many of those children are now in their 50’s and yet fondly remember her impact on their lives as kids with the Big A club.

In 2005 the Lord led Mother Black to join her son-in-love (who she calls her son) Eld. Fredrick L. Nunn Sr and daughter, Sherry and the Eternal Life Worship Center. She served wherever she was needed. In May 2008 the Lord impressed upon her heart to pray for the first seven days of each month. She shared it with her Pastor and in June 2008 Eternal Life began what is now known as the “7 Days of Prayer”. And it yet continues to this day. Many souls have been saved because she gave God her “Yes”. Mother Black leaves to cherish her memories, her daughters, Sherry (Fredrick) Nunn Sr. Grandview MO; Bernadette Black, Venessa (Jeffrey) Hampton; Carla (Joshua) Bowls, Dominique Black all of Kansas City, MO. She leaves her grandchildren, Kristian, Fredrick (Rameisha), Maia (Jonathan), Destiny, Aaron Michael, Joshua, Nicholas, Prince and Promise. Her great-grandchildren, Horizon, Halo and Ma’Laia. She leaves a God-daughter Keisha Brown. She leaves a brother/cousin Oliver (Verna) Canada, Alexandria LA; sister/cousin, Ruthie (Gerald)Hill, Chicago, IL; sister-in-laws Cleo Canada and Karla Canada both of Kansas City MO. She leaves a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. She leaves her dear friend of many years Treva Lee. Her little fur baby Kehlani aka “Kiki”, Eternal Life; Victorious Life Church and a host of friends.

A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Victorious Life Church, located at 3400 Paseo Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64109. Visitation will begin at 8:00 a.m., followed by the service at 10:00 a.m.
