Mrs. Betty Mathews Cook, 87, of Buena Vista, GA, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Piedmont Northside Hospital in Columbus, GA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at New Providence Baptist Church with Rev. David Chapman officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, from 5:00-7:00PM at Way-Watson Funeral Home in Buena Vista, GA.
Mrs. Cook was born in Buena Vista, GA, on August 2, 1938, to Charles L. and Thelma Harbuck Mathews. She was a wonderful mama that her children were proud and blessed to have and as the oldest sibling, she also had a hand in raising her brothers and sisters. Mrs. Cook was a devoted member of New Providence Baptist Church and was involved with various aspects of the church. She served as the church clerk for 30 years, taught Sunday school for over 20 years, and was very active in the WMU. Mrs. Cook worked as a rural mail carrier for several years, starting out as a substitute and eventually becoming a regular carrier for the last seven years of her career. In her younger years, she worked at the Buena Vista Theater. as well as working part-time for the Tax Commissioner at the time, Robert Taylor. Mrs. Cook loved to work in her flowers and read. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Clinton Cook, four brothers, Charles Mathews, Jr., Gene Mathews, Jack Mathews, and Thomas Mathews, her sister, Albena McGrother and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Mathews
She is survived by her three children, Clinton I. and Lisa Cook of Leesburg, GA, Charles H. “Chuck” and Amy Cook of Griffin, GA, and Laura Cook of Buena Vista, GA; by two brothers, Robert and Brenda Mathews of Ellaville, GA and John Mathews of Buena Vista, GA; two sisters, Ethel and Dan Arrington of Oakland, GA, and Darlene and Toney Greene of Rossville, GA; a brother-in-law, Earl McGrother of Buena Vista, GA; two sisters-in-law, Susan Rustin Mathews of Buena Vista, GA, and Rita Mathews of Mauk, GA; Numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family also survive.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Providence Baptist Church, St. Jude’s Children's Hospital at https://www.stjude.org/donate , Boys Town at boystown.org or to Heart to Heart in Buena Vista.
