Betty Couchenour Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wolfe Funeral Home - Fort Mill on Dec. 24, 2022.
Mrs. Betty Jane Couchenour, 85, peacefully passed away at her home Wednesday, December 21, 2022.
The family received friends from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., Tuesday, December 27, 2022, in the Family Life Center of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, Indian Land, S.C. The service followed at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary, with the Rev. Randy A. Madsen officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, BJ was the daughter of the late Ann Corle. She graduated from Johnstown High School and after raising her children, went on to earn a degree in nursing from USC-Lancaster. BJ worked as a school nurse for Lancaster County School District where she made a difference in many children's lives. During this time, she also tutored adults with the Lancaster County Literacy Program.
BJ met Daniel E. Couchenour in Washington D.C. and after only 9 weeks of romance, married him in 1959. They had a loving marriage for over 63 years and rarely seeing one without the other. She and Dan raised four wonderful children as well as 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many adored pets. They have called Indian Land home for nearly 50 years.
Faith in the Lord was very important to BJ and she lived her life by the Ten Commandments. She was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where she loved to sing in the choir and was an active member of her Sunday school classes. BJ was known for her service in the UMW and MM's group. The most important part of BJ's life was being a mother and caring for her family. She shared her faith and loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren immensely. They were her pride and joy.
BJ is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Dan Couchenour. She is also survived by her children, Kelly C. Mitchum of Indian Land, Lori C. Griffin (Raymond) of Indian Land, Scott W. Couchenour (Teri) of Fort Mill, and Bradley J. Couchenour (Rachel) of Charlotte, N.C.; her grandchildren, Ryan Griffin (Amanda), Dan Couchenour (Hannah), Jacob Couchenour, Samantha Mitchum and George Couchenour; her great grandchildren, Riley and Aubrey Griffin and Zella Couchenour. There are also numerous nieces and nephews that loved their Aunt Bee as well as friends that became family.
She was preceeded in death by her granddaughter, Kaitlin Alexandra Mitchum McKee (2018); her sister and brother-in-law Joan and Jim Havener, her brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Ruth Corle and her bother Jerry Corle.
Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, 238 Fort Mill Highway, Indian Land, SC 29707 and to Interim Hospice, 154 Amendment Ave., Suite 105, Rock Hill, SC 29732.
