A Celebration of Life for Betty Averett Curtis will be held in the chapel of Bumpers Funeral Home in York on Monday, December 1st with visitation at 2:00 pm and service led by Rev. Lyle Meador at 3:00 pm. Interment will follow at Cokes Chapel Cemetery in Ward, Alabama.

Betty, aged 77 was born in Greensboro, Alabama, on October 20, 1948, to Luther S. and Grace Clary Averett. She passed away peacefully at age 77 after a long journey with cancer surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Danny Royce Curtis. She was a devoted mother to daughters, Danielle Spree (Kee) of Tuscaloosa and Leigh Powell (Chilton) of Birmingham. She had three grandsons, Jack Powell, Royce Spree, and Lee Spree who were her pride and joy. She was affectionately known as Bebe to them. She is survived by brother Larry Averett (Jennifer) and sisters Shirley McClurkin and Dorothy Boteler (James). She was loved by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Grace Averett.

Betty grew up in the Mt. Hermon Community of Greensboro, Alabama. After graduating from Greensboro High School, she attended Livingston University where she received her Bachelor's, Master's, and Educational Specialist Degrees in Elementary Education. In May of 1970, while she was doing her student teaching in Linden she met her future husband, Danny Curtis. Betty and Danny got married in 1974 and resided in Ward, Alabama. Betty taught elementary education for 38 years and retired in 2008. She loved her students and enjoyed teaching. She touched the lives of so many people and will truly be missed. She lived many joyous years raising her children and taking care of her family. Betty enjoyed cooking, growing flowers, hunting, crossword puzzles, spending time with friends, family, and her 3 grandsons. She was always positive no matter what struggles she faced. She was an active member of the Ward Methodist Church for almost 55 years.
