Margaret Smith Obituary
Born in Sumter County, Alabama, on October 12, 1949, Margaret was the daughter of George Wilson Rainer and Margaret Matherson Rainer. She grew up surrounded by a large, lively family and carried those deep-rooted values of loyalty, humor, and resilience throughout her life.
Margaret Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings George Daniel Rainer, Orland Nick Rainer, Rodney Rainer, Roy Rainer, Don Rainer, and Peggy Rainer Gibson. Their memories remained close to her heart.
For 30 years, Margaret Ellen dedicated her career to the UAB Internal Medicine Residency Program, where she was known for her reliability, kindness, and the steady support she offered to colleagues and residents alike. Her work ethic and compassion left a lasting mark on all who had the privilege of working with her.
She is survived by her daughter Kelly Andrews (Mike), her son Shaun Smith, and her cherished grandson Zachary Andrews (Bryana). Margaret Ellen's greatest joy in her later years was her great granddaughter, Alice Monroe Andrews, whom she lovingly referred to as her most precious final gift.
Margaret Ellen also leaves behind her devoted companion of 35 years, Billy Ferguson. Billy brought love, laughter, and steadfast companionship into her life, and their bond was a source of comfort and happiness for decades.
Margaret Ellen will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her quiet strength, tenacity, and the deep love she held for her family. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and the countless lives she touched.
