SALEM - Betty Barbara Gray, 82, passed away peacefully Monday evening, September 22, 2025, at Brookdale Senior Living in Salem.
Betty was born on August 19, 1943, in Camden, New Jersey, to William A. and Martha E. (Root) Babel. As the daughter of a dedicated minister, her childhood was spent in a variety of communities across the country, each new place shaping her gentle spirit and strong faith.
Betty graduated from Brookville High School and went on to earn her degree in education from Clarion University, both in Pennsylvania. It was during a Baptist summer camp that Betty met the love of her life, Harold W. Gray-a meeting that would blossom into a beautiful lifelong partnership. They were married on August 14, 1965, beginning a journey of 59 years filled with love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their bond remained strong and endured every season of life, until Harold's passing in August of 2024, just days after their anniversary.
The couple's early years together included a brief time in Philadelphia before Betty and Harold made their home in Hubbard, Ohio, where they both found joy in working as educators. Betty began teaching English at Hubbard High School, a role she loved-especially when she and Harold had the chance to chaperone student trips to Europe together, creating memories that lasted a lifetime. When their children were born, Betty embraced her most cherished role as a stay-at-home mom, pouring her heart into raising her family. As the kids grew older, she returned to work in a local sewing store, where her love of teaching and her passion for quilting came together. Through her quilting classes, she shared not just skills, but joy, creativity, and friendship with those around her.
Over the years, Betty poured her heart into her church community, finding joy in being part of countless musicals and plays. Her gift for sewing became more than just a hobby-it was a ministry. She lovingly stitched together costumes for church productions, always with care, creativity, and a touch of grace. One of her greatest sources of fun was performing as one half of the "Ding-a-Ling Sisters" with her dear friend Diane. Their lighthearted comedy skits that they performed at church functions brought laughter and smiles to so many and their friendship was a source of strength, joy, and endless laughter.
Betty and Harold shared a love for life's simple pleasures. Together, they explored the beauty of the United States in their RV, spending countless peaceful days in state parks, surrounded by nature and each other's company. Those quiet adventures became some of their most treasured memories. Back at home, Betty found comfort in the quiet companionship of her beloved cat, who was never far from her side-curled up beside her as she quilted, or read.
Betty's greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind a daughter, Dede (Bill) Webb of Salem, granddaughters Jorden Webb and Sydney Webb - who lovingly called her "Nana", and a son, Nathan (Janet) Gray of Broadview Heights and granddaughter Avery Gray.
Family and friends will be received from 5-7 p.m., on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Stark Memorial Funeral Home, 1014 E. State St., Salem, where a funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. Interment will be at Belmont Park Cemetery, Youngstown.
