Betty Locke ObituaryLitchfield : Juanita "Betty" McKinnon Locke, 94 of Norfolk Rd. died Wednesday, September 10,2025. She was the widow of Emil (Lochowski) Locke who passed away on January 31, 2020. They were happily married for nearly 70 years.
Born on May 23, 1931 in Springfield, MA, Betty was the daughter of the late George F. and Rhoda (Murphy) McKinnon of Litchfield. She spent her childhood in Belchertown, MA. The family later moved to Norfolk, CT where Betty graduated from Gilbert High School, in Winsted, CT. She later lived in the Hartford area and attended accounting classes at the Hartford Institute of Accounting where she met her husband Emil. They married in 1951.
Betty and Emil moved to Norfolk Road in Litchfield in the 1950s where she was employed by the Litchfield Public School system for over 50 years. Betty began as a bookkeeper in the School lunch program and in the late 1960s took a position in the Litchfield High School library which she held until her retirement in 2005. Betty thoroughly enjoyed her career, especially the students she mentored over the years and the deep friendships she developed and treasured throughout her life.
Betty had many interests and was involved in many school and charitable activities throughout her life. She was actively involved with the Girl Scouts of America serving for many years as a troop leader. At Litchfield High School Betty was involved with the AFS Intercultural Programs, the National Honor Society, and also served on the Yearbook Committee. In addition, she attended many sporting events such as field hockey and basketball. Betty was an active member of the Daughters of Isabella, at both the state and local level, volunteered at innumerable charitable events including the Litchfield
American Red Cross Blood Bank, the Litchfield Road Race, and the Friends of Fisher House to mention a few.
After her retirement in 2005 Betty continued to volunteer at the Litchfield Center School library, keeping her skills sharp and spending time doing the things she enjoyed. Betty enjoyed traveling with her spouse and friends and was able to visit Italy, England, France, Switzerland, Holland and the Canadian Rockies. She enjoyed attending social events such as Woman's Forum and the Teacher's Retirement luncheons. Betty loved living in Litchfield and also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and close friends. She was a true friend to many and she will be missed for her understanding, sense of humor and compassion.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Jacalyn Mills and her husband Earl of St. Petersburg, FL. She was predeceased by her daughter Jan Locke Lincoln and her sister, Gloria McKinnon Perret of Torrington, CT.
Her family would like to extend their thanks to Monsignor Tucker for providing spiritual guidance and support and all the friends that supported Betty, especially Michael Lyn and John Cappello, Joanne Moore and Rita Caruso. Her family also extends their deepest gratitude to Chore and GrowingHearts for the care and support they provided to Betty.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 30, 2025 at 11:00am at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 49 South Street,
Litchfield, CT. Interment will follow in the family plot in the St, Anthony of Padua Cemetery, Whites Wood Road,
