Born on May 23, 1931 in Springfield, MA, Betty was the daughter of the late George F. and Rhoda (Murphy) McKinnon of Litchfield. She spent her childhood in Belchertown, MA. The family later moved to Norfolk, CT where Betty graduated from Gilbert High School, in Winsted, CT. She later lived in the Hartford area and attended accounting classes at the Hartford Institute of Accounting where she met her husband Emil. They married in 1951.
Betty and Emil moved to Norfolk Road in Litchfield in the 1950s where she was employed by the Litchfield Public School system for over 50 years. Betty began as a bookkeeper in the School lunch program and in the late 1960s took a position in the Litchfield High School library which she held until her retirement in 2005. Betty thoroughly enjoyed her career, especially the students she mentored over the years and the deep friendships she developed and treasured throughout her life.
Betty had many interests and was involved in many school and charitable activities throughout her life. At Litchfield High School Betty was involved with the AFS Intercultural Programs, the National Honor Society, and also served on the Yearbook Committee. Betty was an active member of the Daughters of Isabella, at both the state and local level, volunteered at innumerable charitable events including the Litchfield American Red Cross Blood Bank, the Litchfield Road Race, and the Friends of Fisher House to mention a few.
After her retirement in 2005 Betty continued to volunteer at the Litchfield Center School library, keeping her skills sharp and spending time doing the things she enjoyed. Betty enjoyed traveling with her spouse and friends and was able to visit Italy, England, France, Switzerland, Holland and the Canadian Rockies. She enjoyed attending social events such as Woman's Forum and the Teacher's Retirement luncheons. Betty loved living in Litchfield and also enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family and close friends. She was a true friend to many and she will be missed for her understanding, sense of humor and compassion.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Jacalyn Mills and her husband Earl of St. Petersburg, FL. She was predeceased by her daughter Jan Locke Lincoln and her sister, Gloria McKinnon Perret of Torrington, CT.
Her family would like to extend their thanks to Monsignor Tucker for providing spiritual guidance and support and all the friends that supported Betty, especially Michael Lyn and John Cappello, Joanne Moore and Rita Caruso.
