Betty passed away peacefully on Monday, May 27, 2024, at St. Benedicts Health Center.

She was born on October 19, 1922 in Dickinson, ND the daughter of Frank and Rose (Steckler) Hegel. Betty’s childhood consisted mainly of farm chores and attending a rural country schoolhouse. As a young adult Betty worked at Winky’s Ice Cream Shop. Betty married Joseph H. Maus on October 21,1947 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dickinson, ND. They were blessed with four children; Elaine, Robert, Donald, and Kathleen.  The family made their initial home on a small farm near Wibaux, MT. and in 1954 returned to the farm Betty grew up on south of Dickinson. Betty had an extraordinary work ethic and didn't hesitate or complain about doing any job including milking cows by hand, shoveling grain, picking rocks, or hauling square bales.

After the sudden loss of her husband in 1972, Betty retired from the farm and moved to Dickinson in 1975. She now had time for a picture-perfect garden. Not a weed could be found. She planted and shared her bountiful harvest with many. The seeds she carefully collected and distributed from her lovely flower garden continue to thrive in the gardens of friends and neighbors, highlighting her conservative nature. In her later years Betty converted her garden into a pumpkin patch with proceeds donated to St. Joseph's Youth Group. She was also known for making some of the best homemade bread and rolls. Betty spent countless hours babysitting her grandchildren, showering them with love and affection, and cherished every moment.

Betty filled her winters crocheting afghans for her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed embroidering and refinishing furniture.

Central to Betty’s life was her unwavering devotion to her Catholic faith. Her primary criteria when moving into Dickinson was her home had to be within walking distance of St. Joseph's Church. Even with her busy daily routine, she started the day out by attending Mass or Communion services. For over 30 years, she participated in Eucharistic Adoration, a testament to her deep spiritual connection. Betty was a member of St. Anne's Society where she also assisted with church functions. Betty’s legacy of faith, hard work, and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Betty is survived by her children, Elaine (Clifford) Mayer of Dickinson, Donald (Susie) Maus of Dickinson; nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren with another great-grandchild to be born in late July; daughter-in-law Sheryl Maus; and son-in-law, Bob (Pat) Eckes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Rose Hegel; husband, Joseph H. Maus; son, Bob; daughter, Kathy (Maus) Eckes; brother, Alex Hegel; and sisters, Marian Hegel, Veronica Barth, and Rose Sticka.
