Beverly Barkeley Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 20, 2024.
Beverly Anne Barkeley, aged 87, passed away on October 18, 2024, in Oakland Township, Michigan. She was born in Pontiac, Michigan on June 21, 1937.
Bev graduated from Pontiac Central High School and later Eastern Michigan College, setting the stage for her lifelong commitment to English education. She began her career teaching English at Madison Junior High School in Pontiac, Michigan. Bev moved into the publishing industry, where she worked as a textbook editor in Stamford, Connecticut and later in Chicago, Illinois spending the remainder of her career at Scott-Foresman. Her meticulous nature and deep understanding of literature helped shape many young minds through her editorial contributions.
Family and reading were central to Bev's life. Her appreciation of the written word and her ability to share her knowledge bonded Bev with the next generations of her family to instill a love of reading. Bev loved to travel and enjoyed the theatre. She was a kind and generous individual who cherished her relationships with her family and friends. Bev is survived by several nieces and nephews and their families - Susan Arminio (Mark), Janice Richey, Dianne Gladstone (Scott), Jim Barkeley (Pam), Bill Barkeley (Marybeth), David Barkeley (Wendy), and John Barkeley (Karla). She is also survived by her sister-in-law Jackie Barkeley. She was predeceased by her parents George W and Olga Barkeley and brothers, Norman, Duane, and Alan Barkeley.
In honor of Bev's life and her contributions, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Breast Cancer or AFTD (The Association for Frontal Temporal Degeneration), organizations that reflect her compassionate spirit and commitment to helping others.
