Beverly Matulis Obituary

Beverly Ann Matulis
Beverly Ann (Sayles) Matulis, 78, of Midland, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, January 10, 2026, surrounded by her family in Midland, Michigan. Beverly was born on October 10, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, to Harold and Alice Sayles.
In 1971, she married the love of her life, Michael Matulis. They built their life together in Midland, where they raised three sons: Michael (Mallarie), Joseph (Amber), and Christopher (Cindy). Beverly was blessed with and deeply loved her seven grandchildren: Hobie, Henry, Hallie, Hazel, Eleanor, Finley, and Adaline. She is survived by her husband of fifty-four years; sisters, Barbara Hofmeister, Muriel Justman, and Beth Sayles; brother, Donald Sayles; three sons; and beloved nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Beverly taught fifth grade at McAlear-Sawdin Elementary School in Bay City, Michigan. She was also an adjunct professor at Saginaw Valley State University, where she taught writing. Beverly served as a co-director of the Saginaw Bay National Writing Project and was the first teacher in Michigan to earn the distinction of National Board Certified Teacher in Language Arts.
Beverly enjoyed bike riding, sailing, writing, studying history, and visiting Mackinac Island. She had a deep love for helping others and served as a Big Sister through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. She was also a Stephen Minister at Trinity Lutheran Church, where she helped church members write their life stories.
A celebration of life will be held in June at Trinity Lutheran Church. Details will be shared at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.

Bev was my daughter's kindergarten or 1st grade teacher. She inspired Traci to become a 1st grade teacher. Bev was her mentor and favorite teacher. We are both sad to hear about her.
