Beverly J. Pyke

AKWESASNE – Beverly J. Pyke, 77, passed away Sunday morning, September 28, 2025 at her home.

Beverly was born in Malone on July 5, 1948, the daughter of the late Joseph Harry and Margaret Hazel (Oakes) Pyke. She was a graduate of Salmon River Central School and continued her education at University of Quebec at Chicoutimi, SUNY Plattsburgh, and McGill University.

Beverly worked for a time as a lab technician at Alice Hyde Hospital. Her true love was education and teaching literacy at Kahnawake Survival School and the Native American Center in Worchester, Massachusetts. She was instrumental in establishing the literacy and GED program in Akwesasne as the director of ABCDEFG. She was a member of the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership, active with the Provincial and Federal Party of Ontario, the Akwesasne Death Benefits, and provided cultural training for the Canadian Customs. Additionally, Beverly was a published author and political activist, who enjoyed reading, watching television, and followed her grandchildren at their lacrosse games.

Beverly is survived by her daughters, Kateri and Maria Pyke, both of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Anya and Phoebe Derouchie Pyke, Tahonwentsiawakon Moon, Tehohahiio Silver, Teiotsistohkwathe Petal, and Teiowa'kerahthe Jem; her sisters, Peggy Pyke Thompson and Brenda Francis; her brothers, Vaughn (Diane) Aldrich, Robert Pyke, Michael "Gus" (Hillary) Pyke, and Patrick "Squiggy" (Holly) Pyke; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her siblings, Hattie Marie, Matthew John, David Alex "Roxy", Larry, and Kevin Louis "Kal" Pyke.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, October 4th from 1-4:00 PM at the Sunrise Acres Training Room, 378 State Highway 37, Hogansburg. There will be no prior calling or formal funeral services.
