Vassilios Spanakos Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Carpino Funeral Home - Southbury on Jan. 26, 2026.
SOUTHBURY- Vassilios "Bill" Spanakos, 89, beloved husband, father, father-in-law, and brother, died peacefully at home on January 22, 2026.

He was born on August 17, 1936, in Piraeus, Greece. A place that shaped his values, strength, and deep love for his homeland. Though life carried him far from where he began, Greece has always remained close to his heart.

Vassilios lived a life marked by hard work, adventure, and quiet devotion to family. As a Merchant Marine, he traveled the world, gaining experiences and stories that reflected his courage, resilience, and curiosity about life beyond the horizon.

At home in Southbury, he found his greatest joy in simpler pleasures. He loved gardening, especially tending to his many fruit trees, nurturing them with patience and care.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Irini Spanakos; his sons, Manolis Spanakos (Amy) of Southbury, CT; Michael Spanakos of Texas; and Peter Spanakos of Greece; daughter, Angela Spanakos (Kim) of Wynantskill, NY; and grandson, Alex Spanakos of Texas. He is also survived by his brother John Spanakos (Pamela) of Stamford, CT; sister Zoe Spanakos of Greece; brother Elias Spanakos (Elleni) of Greece; and many nieces and nephews who will continue to honor his memory.

Vassilios was preceded in death by his mother, Evaggelia Spanakos of Greece; father, Petros Spanakos of Greece; sister, Margarita Hatzepetrou of Greece; and his brother, Christos Spanakos of Meriden, CT.

He will be remembered for his love of family, his pride in his heritage, his hardworking spirit, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the roots he planted, and the family he loved so deeply.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Friday, January 30, 2026 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Waterbury, CT.

May his memory be eternal. To leave a message of remembrance, please visit www.CarpinoCares.com.

Dear Dad,
I'm sorry I wasn't able to be there to say goodbye, because of the long distance between us.
I'm sorry about the difficult times you went through the past few years.
My sincere condolences to the family.
I'll cherish the good memories we had.
During your trip to Greece in 2019, we visited Karavopetra, and Areopoli , and sea, where the spirit of Mani lives on strongly.
The church bells were also rung in your memory in Greece.
Rest in Peace dad. Thank you for everything you did.
With love
Peter
